Hi all this is my first post on the forum but have read countless others over the years. So my question is which car offers a 0-60 time under 5.5 seconds and comes in under £5000. I'm open to anything as long as it isn't a kit car as I no longer have anywhere to store it. Some of my car history for you so you can get an idea of what I like.
Westfield with a 1.6 crossflow
Toyota Mr2 turbo rev4 (300hp)
2004 civic type r
2008 civic type r
Mazda mx5
998 classic mini
So as you can see practicality is not important what so ever. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Depends what you want in terms of running costs. A Jag XJR would fit your brief, but not cheap to run.

E30 BMW with M52/2.8 engine swap? Or possibly E21?

Mildly modified Impreza possibly. An old Merc or BMW luxobarge with a V12, but that would be a hell of a leap of faith cost wise. A Lexus LS430 wouldn't be quite quick enough, but would hang together for longer. A 986 Boxster 3.2S might get close.

That's cheap for an STI.

Nowt but trouble. From the standpoint of someone who's worked on them for a living at a Jag Indy when they were a current model. Nice to drive when working, financial headache when needing repair.

Probably better to buy a nice Impreza WRX with a remap than a dodgy STI!

Good luck finding any of those under £5k. Unless you've got another £5k for when it goes wrong.
You'll find a good normally aspirated e55 for under 5k. The 5.4 is a very reliable lump.

Awesome, bit surely nowhere near under £5k in today's market.

Useable e30s are pricey now, let alone e21s

You can get a cleanish evo 4 for £5k with circa 350bhp. 0-60 is around 4secs flat with them mods. Hard to beat this I'd say

Yes, pound for pound, you will struggle to better an Evo for prepurchase headline price and aftersale reliability.

Yes, you'd need some luck on your side but I reckon a 4 door E30 is do'able.

Mercedes SLK350? Might just slip into budget. Nice 3.5L V6.

Nissan 350z also a solid option. Again, 3.5L V6...

They're actually quite reliable cars, nothing else with these headline figures could have it's head kicked in for 100k miles and still be on the roads. There's a reason why they're used as track day cars

Evos are exceptionally reliable if cared for, if you could find such an example for 5k, it would certainly better 5.5 to 60.
