Been looking on autotrader, ebay, gumtree, facebook and other sites for a 2003 - 2006 black Toyota MR2 with FSH, clean MOT history/fixed problems, black or blue leather interior, a spoiler and black alloys under 100k on the clock for £6k or under.

Believe it or not, a month ago, I found one of the TF300 range which matches my description (70k on the clock) going for just under £5k. It's still available now but the only thing is, on this year's advisory on the MOT gov site, it says "oil leak".

I spoke to the seller about it, and he goes "there is no oil leak". After another 8 emails of me saying "mate, it's on advisories on gov website, just tell me and at least it's a head's up", he was still saying the same thing over and over - "there is no oil leak".

I asked for the mechanic's number so I could speak to him instead, and get this, I get a reply of... "I'm a registered mechanic with my own garage, I did the MOT. I can do it again if you send me 40 quid."

Told him "shove it up ur arse. I know a con when I see one."

But now, after another 2 weeks of this conversation, temptation is arising. Do I look past the absolute fking prick who's selling it and just go with someone who's in the know to look at the car, or do I steer clear?

It's just that that is the only one I've come across after months of searching.

Part B of question) Does anyone know of a legit MR2 (doesn't have to be a TF300) that matches my description?

Sounds like you are the one being a prick repeatedly calling someone a liar over 2 weeks when you haven't bothered your arse to go and look for yourself. The mot history site is not gospel.

What do you mean? It's an official document written by the mechanic who's checked it over.

The website is full of errors. I have had cars with advisories on the printout that don't appear on the website and advisories on the website that weren't on the printout and not applicable to my car. If you want to know if the car has an oil leak get on your knees and look. Jack the thing up if you must or pay a mechanic to look it over, don't harrass a seller just because a beta website maintained by trade unionists says something on it.

The oil filler cap on the MR2 is fairly well hidden under the chassis bracing. An oil leak could actually be overspill from topping up the oil (I had exactly this advisory on my R1 engined kit car). Either way it's probably worth a look - brilliant cars.

What if I said it's 200 miles away?

An oil leak can be as simple as an £8 gasket weaping oil. It wouldn't put me off and I would try my damndest to find the leak during an inspection.

I don't really trust MOT advisories. Mine currently has an advisory for worn trailing arm bushes, All my trailing arms are fine. My exhaust was leaking though and it didn't get an advisory,

Oil leak is a good thing, Helps to prevent rust on the underside of the vehicle

haha yeah, I'm giving it a miss. I'm sure another will come around that's closer, has got everything I'm wanting without it being a TF300 that's cheaper too.

the hunt continues

Not entirely sure he's going to want to sell it to you now anyway

Renault has had a similar technology called Automatic Rust Suppression Equipment.
