Buying a Pug 207 with No Service History

Possibly going to see a 57 plate 207 GT 1.6 Diesel tomorrow with 90,000 miles on the clock, and the foreign sounding gentleman on the phone was vague about the service history, claiming it was his girlfriend's car and that she had lost the service book. The car is apparently immaculate inside and out (aren't they all...) and he has claimed he can provide proof of mileage although he didn't say how.
I love the look at it and I am in a rush to buy (Direct Line taking my hire car away from me before they have reimbursed me for the car that's been written off, won't bore you) so I probably don't have time to involve trainee mechanic brother and get him to come down and have a look.
What would you do?

If thats OK and it doesn't look fecked when you view it run an HPI and if thats OK and its cheap go for it.

Its a private seller apparently. Haven't seen any reason to think otherwise, although it might be sidewalk seller trying their luck I suppose... the absent girlfriend is a little suspect.. but maybe I'm just being paranoid.

What problems do you know about? I've checked it on Parkers and not come across anything in particular yet.

Are they though...? I've been doing the usual googling for owner reviews, and having had a 206 they don't seem to be any worse. Have you got personal experience? If its a shed obviously I won't bother, but I don't want to not buy something because of unsubstantiated horror stories, if you get me..

I've been in the trade for a few years now and have had enough experience with 1.6 HDIs to know never to touch them again. dart-agnan said:

It's a 1.6HDi. It's a time bomb. Google for the injector and turbo problems with them. They NEED regular oil changes with the right oil to stand a chance of being anything other than a nightmare.Toaster Pilot said:

That's not a bad idea buying a crappy one for a bit tbh. Can probably sell it for what I paid for it. Ta for the heads up re the 1.6 diesels. Shame I really liked that car..
The 1.6HDI is usually OK as long as it has had regular, 12000 miles or less, oil changes using the proper low SAPS fully synthetic oil and the injector seals haven't been allowed to leak.
They do not take neglect at all well and old oil or leaking injectors causes them to carbon up in a horrible way leading to turbo failure and all sorts of on going problems.

Turbo and DPF issues even when there is 100% service history, not an engine that will take much abuse like missed services or poor quality oilsounds like one to run a mile from unless its dirt cheap!!!

That's really good to know, takes the pressure off trying to find something this week.As an update, seller has just emailed me to say Peugeot will have the FSH of the car and I can request it from them. Sounds a bit scammy.. or maybe I'm just cynical.
