I have an old 996 in the garage, which the Mrs has been badgering me to get rid of for about, oh, 8 years now. I have some money coming in from closing a company, and thought about combining it with the proceeds of selling the 996 and some cheap Sainsbury's funding (2.8%) to make up a pot of £50k max. It would be a third/weekend car, and ideally I would like something that I'm not going to lose a fortune over 3-5 years.

Current ideas are

Audi R8 V8 ~£50k
996 Turbo
997 Turbo (not sure if within budget any more)
Audi RS4 B7 ~£25-30k

Other suggestions very welcome!

All the of the above will cost £££££ to maintain.

987 Cayman R or Boxster Spyder (manual) would be my choice.

I think if you were patient you could get a decent 997 Turbo, that would be the choice for me.

They are currently sitting at 50-57k from a trade seller

Cheers, would have to be manual though. I rather like the cut of this guy's jib, although 61k miles is perhaps a bit too high?

Good suggestions both. I can imagine the Spyder eventually ending up as a bit of a classic. Just not sure if I can bring myself to be seen dead in one biggrinbiggrin

V8 Vantage
Manual DB9
GTR

Depreciation has been glacial for years, your budget would allow you into a latter 4.7 Vantage too.

If your worried about depreciation or running costs have you not considered a Morgan?

Great fun to drive and access the performance of lesser models (some are v8's however so are brutally fast), great community and everyone loves them.

They also are very unique, your wife will probably love it and they rarely depreciate and don't cost a huge amount to maintain either.

You have the more Traditional style Morgans, the 3 Wheeler and the Aero 8 to choose from if you're feeling brave..

Wow, that's a proper leftfield suggestion! I have always liked the Aero styling. Showed it to the Mrs, she wasn't overwhlmed sadly. Still, it's got me thinking... :-)

GTRs have gone up, anything with a model that's getting more expensive every year that still looks the same, R8 another.

TVR?

Exige plus change.

Are mercs holding value? I know the argument about if you worry about petrol you can afford it, but 11mpg is hard to swallow.

BMW 1M are only going to go North. Have increased a lot already.

Also the BMW M2 is holding it's value very well.

Porsche 996 Carrera 4S would perhaps be another shout. The Turbo has jumped quite a bit already.

BMW M3 CSL. Yes not a manual box but would again increase.

Ford Focus RS 500. Very limited but I doubt your partner would like it much biggrin

Audi RS5 or S8, get one at the lower end of your budget and future depreciation might not be too bad, not sure if your budget can get you into a newish RS6, but the newer ones are all Avant and you might not want that, you could go lower in budget and get one of the last V10 5.00 RS6, they are very quick and done a fair bit of their depreciating, scary running costs are possible with them however....

Watching this with interest, as I have a similar budget but for an only car, and would prefer not to take a bath on it! I wasn't aware 997 turbos were in range, so it's already been useful!

My shortlist is somewhat similar to yours:
Audi R8
Aston Vantage V8
Bentley Continental GT
BMW M6
Porsche 911

I think the cars starting with "B" will lose money, sadly! 911 too, probably, but not as fast - I can only imagine downward pressure on 997 prices from the 991 as that ages, and it seems that a 991 does (just!) sneak into the top end of your budget. Too rich for me, or I'd have one!

Audi Rs5's and S8 still have a long way to fall IMHO.

For something to hold it's value it has to be less main-stream. Porsche and Aston Martins are good shouts (provided you don't put too many miles on them) as would something less practical such as a Noble or TVR Tuscans.

Everyday cars which have already lost half their value, still have a long way to go even if they are a fast version. The only exception being pristine low mileage ones and you'll lose that as soon as you start using them.

I'm also just about to do this, R8 or GTR. both appear to depreciate slowly but both have fairly expensive running costs. I'm probably having one of each for a year or so for the experience factor.
After that who knows, Exige or Evora perhaps. Lots of nice sporty cars around at that price point.
