So I currently have a Scirocco R from VWFS the car is due to go back in 6 months and I'm unsure what to do. Options are another lease sub 300 a month or buy an older performance car. The leaders are e90 M3, C/E/CLS 63 or even a 997 911. I did originally want a Cerbera but the upkeep scares me.

My concern is upkeep I only do about 5k a year but would maintenance be ruinous? Hopefully most of the depreciation has gone. Anyone changed from a lease to buying or vice versa care to share there experience?

With such low mileage your lease car is costing about £0.80 / mile.
I'm sure you could run many more exotic second-hand cars for less.
A warranty would cover you for many major bills if that's your concern.

Yea but do they actually cover anything when you make a claim? Surely a warranty on an M3 is very expensive?

Im thinking along similar lines when my M135i goes back. Thinking that doing this for 2-3 years will see me with a paid for car that Id keep and then get a cheap lease daily driver

Why not get an online quote for an example car

I doubt it's cheap, but then again neither is leasing a new car.

Exactly this especially as early e92 M3s are dropping below 20k.

A lot depends on how you like to maintain your cars and how long you may keep them. Its just a personal finance decision ultimately and how much you like new cars. I had company cars for a long time but then that stopped so I bought a C55 AMG to run alongside my Boxster. I sold the C55 to lease a Fiesta ST Line as I needed something learner friendly.

If I get something special I'll keep it what do you mean about how I maintain it?

Depending on how old and how many miles for next car has stuff wears out with age and mileage. Sometimes it will fail and you will have no choice to replace it, sometimes it will be failing and you can live with it, sometimes you can replace something before it fails and leaves you stranded. If you've mainly leased or had new cars you've probably never had to think about cars like this. Everybody wants to buy the overly maintained car with a bucket load of new parts but most will only attend to something when it breaks.

£300/month pays for quite a lot of maintenance.
Trick is to get something reliable and/or depreciating slowly. Preferably both!

My suggestions for a sub 20k V8 would be a Lexus ISF, which is probably more reliable than a new BMW/merc/Audi even at 7 years old (and depreciates slowly now) or a really nice old shape (steel body) 4.2 XKR, which are still quite sturdy but are rising in value. Or even an S-type R.

Sometimes it's not. Sometimes it is.

I'm bias but get yourself a CLK63 AMG they're fast & very reliable so far I've had to replace the AC unit & that's it.
Now yes the bushes can wear the same as they can do on any older performance car these are not ruinous but will mean around £600.00 to completely overhaul the front end, with any performance car I'd find a good specialist close to you & they'll normally look after you.

That does appeal but I like the look of the C63 better and the practicality of a 4 door does appeal. That engine is immence I also like CLS. Would a CL like this be more costly than a C63? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Lexus IS a good shout I'm only 31 I don't think I could drive a Jag unfortunately. That 6.2 AMG engine is very tempting I mist admit.

Have you discussed keeping the car with VWFS? I'm going through exactly the same thought process as you with my Golf R going back in March. My lease is 10,000 miles per annum but I'm only doing 6,500 per year so VWFS dropped my lease cost from £225pcm to £163pcm, when I highlighted this to them a few months ago. They've now given me a quote to keep the car for a further 12 months at £190pcm. I just can't make buying and running an equal car for the same cost work. I've looked at GT86's and 911's (996).

If I do end up giving it back and buying something, I'm happy to accept it won't be the best financial decision.

That might be an option mine is for nothing £125 a month with maintenance I done the same and reduced the mileage which saved me about £40. 996 does appeal mind surely a GT86 is a step down.

Yes the CL could be more costly to maintain than a C63 the main reason for this would be the possibility of the air suspension fouling up, but I can recommend one they feel very special, a step above everything else listed take one for a test drive.

Not really, I've had fun cars and I've had fast cars, and fun cars are where it's at for me and the GT86 seems far more fun than much more powerful machinery. I find the Golf R quite boring, the only reason I'd keep it is for convenience.

That's why I've fallen in love with the 6.2 AMG the noise and performance is easy attainable at legal speeds. Plus it scare the hell out of me I haven't driven one I just think the 86 will be too down on power. I get what your saying my Scirroco is a great car but a bit soulless and a tad boring.
