So here it is the point in every man's life where at least a bit of common sense has to take over, after having found out that there is to be an addition to our family I'm in need of freeing up some funds. My current car my 05 CLS 500, my absolute pride and joy is the first to suffer. Turns out that my heavy right foot fairly beefy running costs are just not the way to go (her words not mine). This leaves me with a problem, what do I get to replace 300bhp RWD and the soundtrack of the God's, her answer is something practical 40mpg and cheap to buy so credit cards etc can be paid up in anticipation of the grand arrival. So armed with my best 4k I need something that has a bit about it, hot hatches are off the menu (too chavvy). I came up with the Volvo S40 2.5 T5 sport, a Volvo V50 AWD if you can find it and an Audi TT 1.8T or V6 is a different argument. So what are people's thoughts and are there any other ideas? (Scooby are out too, just had the look😭)

I would get a private plate and put a 320CDi badge on it, she will never know.

Already have the plate, problem is she's a petrol head too and knows the difference between a V8 and a diesel and she drives it now and then, so no getting that past her 😢

How many seats do you need? If only two you know the default answer.

Congrats, firstly for the scheduled new arrival & secondly finding a a Petrol head wife!!

Could you not fit a switch as well as the CDi badge to put it into limp mode if she will be using it? laugh

My thought on a replacement car is a Subaru of some sort, 2.5T Mondeo, suspect it maybe outside budget though, or perhaps an Alfa?

Yeah my first thought was a scoob but she wasn't a fan, the Mondeo ST didn't have enough MPG, (she set the bar at 40+) Alphas were coming in a bit too expensive with decent miles, that's when remembered the Volvo was the same engine as the Focus and a bit more understated in looks (sleeperish) then I spotted the TT's and therein lies my problem lol

The TT and Focus won't give you anything like 40mpg... The TT, maybe mid-30s on a run. The RS can be in the low 20s daily.

Not sure what you'd gain in all of this, especially if you intend to modify.

The Volvo with the same engine is running 40/41 ish and the 1.8 TT is 38.9 according to the interwebs and that's almost 40 lol its better than the 25 I get at the moment and that's very very easy driving, if I party hard in it it's more like 18

It's an excellent idea, but when she drives I'm usually a passenger after a visit to the pub and I don't think I could live with myself knowing the beast is asleep lol

Surely you'd get a nice pick of the improved W209's (06 onwards?) with that budget

Too late for that now she is already preggers.

Your car is not likely to lose to much more value wise, so can't you play the good investment angle. It's a lovely car and it would be a shame to get rid of it.

You do realise that it will take an awful long time to sell if at all wink

With a little one neither of you will be doing the pub.

My daughter is now 8 & i can count on my fingers the number of times Mrs Jim AK & I have done pubs together since!!!

Could you not go diesel in another CLS & chip it? I had an E320 CDi with a Brabus chip & it was amazing. Wont sound great though.

What you need to do is agree with her and say "Yes, I'll put the car up for sale now".

Get it listed this week (no-one buys a car on the week of Christmas) and list it £2k more than it's worth. If it hasn't sold in two months then just say you tried but unfortunately you just can't get it sold.

You might need to think of a backup if she suggests a trade in.

There is that but all the ones I can find have too high a mileage for me and the ones with low mileage are outside my budget. But if I'm totally honest I don't want diesel, she has a diesel C220 estate and one is enough in the family lol

It's already listed on here, that happened last night. She did say "don't do it if you really don't want to" but we all know that means 'if you don't do it, I'll keep banging on about it til you do'

4K to buy a car to replace yours is going to be a stepdown/compromise. Added to this is the unknown reliability of the new motor.

Guessing you are going to get around 7k for yours?

3k ish is the gain. I wouldn't bother, live like peasants for a few months and get the money that way!

If you have to change a 330msport
