My son has been driving 1 year now. He's been driving a Vauxhall corsa. The old shape one. We brought it originally for £500. He's looked after it really well and has been blapping on about a new car. Me and his mother have decided to buy him a car for Christmas which he doesn't know about. What's a good car I can get for roughly £5000 that's cheap for him to insure as well.

I am guessing street cred is important so hard to know what he likes but my first choice would be a Suzuki Swift , they can be a bit more to insure than the smaller engined Corsas and Fiestas though I think

Possibly boring but a newer Corsa?

MINIs are popular but that's not always a good thing, could be expensive to insure

After 1 year I'd assume insurance is still very high ?

What ballpark figure are you looking to keep the insurance below? I'm just coming into my 3rd year driving so I can remember what cars were in reach for me a year ago insurance-wise.
