Hi guys,

Just a bit of guidance please (can't seem to find anything for this or i'm just searching wrong)

Someone is coming tomorrow to look at my car, this is kind of a spur of the moment decision as I decided on Sunday night to put it for sale. I'm going to take the private number plate off it today via the online service, but the V5 will obviously still have my private plate on.

What's the best practice for this incase he wants to take the car tomorrow?

Cheers

Go to the DVLA website and put the number onto a Retention Certificate.

Normally takes about 5 minutes. They will allocate a number to put on the vehicle now.

A new V5 will arrive within a coupe of weeks.

If you give the new buyer copies of the relevant stuff, that should placate them until the new V5 arrives for you to complete etc

FWIW I put my private plate on retention via the website last Monday and the new V5 came in the post on Thursday. When you complete the process online you get a certificate valid for three days to allow you to get new plates made up, otherwise you have to wait for the V5.

It's a really quick process (even allowing for Christmas post).

However remember that the buyer will need the green strip from the *new* V5 and you will need to send off the *new* V5. So if you trigger the online process to put the plate on retention, your existing V5 becomes void.

I guess this is my point, I want to put it on retention tonight and him pick it up tomorrow (Confident he's going to purchase, he's coming from London to Leeds) - Think it's best to give him everything then post him the green slip from the new V5 down when it arrives?

That's what I would do and have done in the past.

We buy lots of cars like this, for us it works like this.

We look at the private plate v5,
Make sure the v5,seller and car are genuine (sometimes we ask to see driving licence or utility bill)
We then ask the seller to send the entire v5 off to us less the yellow section.

We fill out the yellow section in the private v5 and ask the customer to copy that and then send it off to the dvla

We ask that when the new v5 arrives they text us a picture of the front so we have the document reference number.

You can of course move the car into the trade or to a private owner online once you have the new v5 just make sure you choose the right option. It's a pain when customers do it wrong and put us as an owner which is why we prefer the yellow section being posted.
