I Really Don't Know What to Buy Next - Help!
Discussion
I've had a year of driving around in a Cayenne diesel which is a lovely thing, comfortable, handles well and I can carry my parents around. I fancy a change and want something that is a bit quicker and a bit smaller than the Cayenne but has good handing (so I can fling it around with the same confidence I can with the Cayenne) comfortable seats and 4 doors. It doesn't have to be an SUV but has to be a bit of a 'special' experience to own like the Cayenne.
Budget is < £35k and needs to give me 30 mpg on average.
I had a Ghibli as a loaner for 2 days and, although I loved it, it was bigger than the Porsche and was a bit low and caught the speedbumps at work which wouldn't be too healthy for if I had one as a daily driver.
A Jag XF is also a no-no. I had one and it was nothing but trouble.
The only thing I could think of were Audi S4 avant or S5 sportback or BMW 435d / 640d Gran Coupe.

I think you would struggle with 30mpg in the s4, we have had a couple of s4's and s5's they are quick and great a-b but to be honest they are a little dull. You might get an rs4 for 35k but an s6 might also fall into budget, it's a great all weather car and a little bit nicer than the s4. The s8 is also very quick and comfy but again a little bit .... Well typical Audi.
A 335i is a very nice car, the 435d would be a great car, 640d ..... I thought I would like it but I'm not so sure, yes it's comfy and quick but still powered by the wrong fuel.

If that is what you really think then God help you, there must be an awful lot of cars that are better than a Diesel Cayenne surely?briang9 said:

OK, so what would you recommend then: Fast, fun, comfortable, 4 doors, 30+mpg and 'PH cred'?Edited by Seeker UK on Sunday 27th November 00:43
well anything that is not diesel, or an SUV sort of thing I guess, RS6 Avant maybe?
wont get you the MPG you want, but I never really understand folk who want a decent quick car and then worry about MPG, bit like buying a boat and worrying about it getting wet IMHO

That's plan B. Buy a cheaper car that's heavier on fuel but no monthly payments - could I get a good (S)6 for £15k?
Hmm looking at what's for sale at the moment I think you would struggle to get a low mileage example for that, (I presume you mean the C6) suspect the market might be quiet at this time of year and will probably pick up in the new year if you can wait ETA this one looks OK, (but is sold) and only slightly over budget so maybe you could get close

OP the cars you have listed are pretty boring..
I accept that, it's the main reason I started the thread. Suggest something unboring that might be something I'll enjoy.Having read everyone's answers so far, 30mpg is only an issue if I buy one on finance. If < £15k, I can buy outright and so fuel costs become less of an issue.
How about this?

Believe it or not, they're bigger than a Cayenne.
THE RSQ3 is an interesting idea.
I actually did not know that THE RSQ3 is an interesting idea.
My sister has a RS Q3 and they are very good. Better than the RS3 and the TT RS to drive which was surprising.
They have been updated a few times. Originally it had 310 bhp and then it increased to 335 bhp and finally the RS Q3 Performance got 362 bhp.
My sis gets around 36 mpg but this obviously would decrease if you decide to go a bit nuts.
The Porsche Macan would be even better but you are going to pay more for the experience.
