Hey guys. I am moving from central London to the depth of Kent. I live 20 mins drive from the nearest station and will need a car to do the each way commute every day. I ideally am looking for something interesting at around £5-6k. Running costs are not an issue for either patrol or maintenance but reliability must be spot on and I ideally don't want to be filling up too much so either a big tank or diesel. I will be getting up very early and back pretty late so something which will not give me problems from cold, defrost quickly and perhaps have heated seats.

I have been thinking of perhaps a Phaeton or a 1990s Merc but open to suggestions. The car will be kept outside 24/7.

Ford Fiesta.

Don't forget, you want a car that won't appeal to scrotes and scratchers.

Golf GTI mkv/6

Reasoning? 20 mins is a pretty short journey, so something a bit fun is more important than a barge. Or alternatively a sporty ford as I think Ford have heated front windscreens.

Renault ZOE - plenty of them 2nd hand at £5-6k if you're happy to pay battery hire

Preheating via the app - free parking at some stations - not too big - great station car.

with the experience i have had of kent station car parks i would get the rattiest focus i could find ideally without alloys or anything else that's worth steeling

that way it wont matter when its backed into has doors slammed open against it, gets keyed or the thieves are about looking for stuff to nick

I'd say a Focus ST hits the spot comfortable & quick with a great engine as well as heated seats/windscreen in ST3 spec.

I'm happy to consider anything but am leaning more towards a barge for comfort and ease of use.

Lexus IS250SE-L.
Or maybe a 9-5 aero or an s-type jag for a bit more interest, but more bork potential. Having said that everything on the road has more bork potential than an IS250. None of these will catch the eyes of the lowlife.

For that kind of thing, surely you want a 500 quid Nissan Almera or Toyota Corolla.

Thanks for the replies. I can see thr attraction in an utter snotter but if I have to spend 40mins a day in the car I'd rather it was something half decent.

Some great stuff to look at. I was thinking of a Phaeton as an option, anyone got any views on that?

How about an Audi C5 S6? Reliable, comfortable, safe, quattro gets you around in all conditions, 4.2 V8 350 hp, not the most frugal but has a large tank!
Alternatively a B6 S4 with the same engine (almost)? Go for an Avant shape for added room and coolness cool
Both can be left anywhere without getting a second glance, are superb cars and that engine makes any commute nicer without having to drive at the limit like you'd have to in hot hatch!

ETA:
just browsed the classifieds and I can find only 1 (one!!) C5 S6. And that is not even an Avant one. Where have they all gone? There used to be much more around..

A Phaeton is surely the one of the worst possible choices - huge engine, ages to heat up - won't fit in spaces easily, especially if your station has a multi-story car park - uneconomical - prone to massive bills ..

However, it's a very PH choice. Go for it smile

Can't go wrong with a Toyota IQ. Quirky, Fun, reliable and best of all, cheap as chips (£20 road tax, 50-60mpg).

I've just got myself an* automatic one as a cheap little commuter car and it's fantastic. They come with lots of handy little gadgets too like key-less entry, auto lights and auto wipers, Mp3/Aux port (the sound system is surprisingly good) etc. It's like a golf cart with doors and I love it!

Any Ford with climate pack would be ideal as a station snotter, you won't get anything more reliable or practical, what about a Mondeo ST if you want a bit more comfort/interestingness?
