Sorry to trawl out another " I can't make a decision, please help" thread but I've Recently changed jobs and my petrol VRS is not cutting the mustard when it comes to economy.

I'm travelling around 30,000 per year and at 36mpg I'm getting seriously out of pocket.
Even driving like Miss Daisey I can only achieve 38ish.

I've looked around and there are many "cars" that fit the criteria but they're just "cars" nothing remotely good or interesting.
Then there are the advertised 70mpg that in a real world equates to 50mpg.

So thinking heads on, what could I be looking at for a new or year old runabout?

Most modern 2.0 TDIs can do this.

How about a CLS 250d?

Yeah but anything you buy will depreciate really hard doing 30k a year. Might as well make it something that's done a lot of depreciating already.

ALfa Guiletta

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

All the toys, auto, paddles, BOSE, oodles of modern kit, 2 year warranty

Apparently 74.3 extra urban, 65.7 average mpg

It's this, a Volvo of some sort or a BMW

I am sure you have thought of the following

Golf GTD

BMW 320 turbo diesel

BMW 120 coupe/hatch turbo diesel

BMW 125 coupe/Hatch turbo diesel

Mini Diesel

Skoda Octavia VRS diesel? Might get a good deal trading in

I'd say the 180bhp Mondeo Titanium will hit the numbers you're looking for.

At 30k you should definitely look at diesel. I wouldn't worry about cars with 50k miles on it already as you will put loads of miles on it every year. You need to look for comfort and a quality stereo. Apparently volvo have the best seats for comfort.

Similar dilemma here, but 'interesting' doesn't really feature in my current shortlist...

Leon FR 184
Octavia TDI 150
Superb TDI 150
120D Sport
Countryman
Infiniti Q50
Passat CC
Mazda 6 Sport

The Leon is currently my preferred choice as it's the cheapest, but also the quickest.

Or one of these:

Focus ST-3 Diesel

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Same size as the Leon & according to testers a better steer than the Leon, it has the same engine as the 180bhp Mondeo but wrapped in a smaller chassis.

I would look for a decent Auto if you're doing that many miles. Comfort needs to be your number 1 priority.

Seat Leon FR 184 is a very good shout.

Good cars, but a lot more expensive than the equivalent Leon... around £4k.

Not, in my opinion worth it, and MQB chassis cars do drive well.

Really like the new Lexus cars but it definitely will not do 60mpg. The claimed mpg is 60 but you'll get more like mid 40's. I'd personally suggest a Mazda 3 or 6, both extremely good value and a little bit different.
Nope.
The claimed mpg is 74.5mpg
I get 60mpg+ on my commute, thanks to ev mode

On motorways, it drops to 45mpg so maybe that's where you getting it from
Same batteries as a prius + silky smooth 2.5 V6 n/a

I agree, I've got one, mid to high 40, no way 60mpg. Fairly expensive to buy, and at 30k miles a year the service intervals of only 10k (12k on business) will push up the running cost. Standard service £175 and main £450, they alternate every 10k miles. Nice car but not cheap to run on high milage.
