Lexus IS250 vs BMW 335i
Discussion
I've had my IS250 for a month or so now. Previously I had an E92 335i Msport.
The BMW was faster, better handling, more fun, arguably better looking, more tech, newer, lower mileage
The Lexus is more comfortable, slightly more efficient, more reliable
So why do I prefer the Lexus?
It doesn't make sense to me.

It's a brilliant, smooth engine in the Lexus. Nicely screwed together car. etc. Nice to drive. The BMW was faster, better handling, more fun, arguably better looking, more tech, newer, lower mileage

It's like "why do I prefer my Mk 3 MX5 to an S2000, Boxster, etc". I just do, it just works at sensible speeds, etc.

Has my quest for ever lower 0-60 times been in vain? I remember saying maybe 10 years ago, my next car is going to be 200hp and I got a 200SX. Loved it. Then I wanted more. Maybe, but 0-60 isn't everything vs a nicely balanced, car as a daily driver.I read something semi-randomly on Honest John last night that said the IS250 is probably the most reliable car on the road - I thought to myself "Is that too boring for someone in their mid 30s?"
What about all the other cars I have wanted to own and try one day, and still do want to but struggle with reliability.

Lovely cars. Fully equipped with almost everything and they just don't seem to go wrong. Capable of daft mileage effortlessly without a squeak or rattle. I think i'd have one just to be different. Never been too keen on BMW's anyway. I think as an ownership proposition you can't really go wrong.
The only problem would be image (that is if you're that self conscious and care too much about what other people think) and depreciation. I think the reliability overall could offset the amount you'd lose on the car though so might not seem so bad.
I think they look good, still has RWD, nice size of saloon, heard they're surprisingly good on fuel despite the size and nature of the engine, smooth 2.5 V6, low tax (if automatic), the list goes on. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter as long as you're happy with it.

Lexus hold their value well, I'd say as good if not better than bmw. I was hoping to pick a NX300h after my IS but they just don't seem to drop much, might as well buy a new one.

Had a IS250 for 2 years, superb motor. I would stick my head out and say they are probably the best used petrol cars you could get. The fact they dont sell in the UK is mind boggling and just goes to show how much the public is brainwashed by German cars. It's like "why do I prefer my Mk 3 MX5 to an S2000, Boxster, etc". Its not terribly fast, nor exciting but its good to be driving something different from everyone else and its very very quiet and calm in the cabin. In this age of jammed traffic and idioc drivers thats a very good thing to have.
I wont go without saying the IS220D is brutal....Lexus dont make Diesels no more and learnt from it.

Different model, I moved to the new Lexus IS300h from a BMW F30, I think it's great and much more refined than the F30 I had.
How is the performance? The reviews all mention how poor the gearbox is, I think it's well suited to the car, a bit slow responding in Eco/std mode but in sport it goes really well, I'd say quicker 40 to 100mph than the bmw.
My f30 and Lexus were the same price, Lexus had leather interior, Xeon lights, heated seats, sat Nav, dab, auto gearbox keyless entry plus other bits I can't think of. Looking forward to hopefully an NX if I can get a good deal.
