I want to go as fast as possible. It's only for a few months thanks to some scumbag stealing my Polo GTi.

The Mrs needs a car while we get paid out/buy a new car.

Really hoping to see a MK1 Audi S3 fall in budget.

What would you buy?

I can't see that Audi being much fun. I would be, and am, looking at Clio 172s.

Just put £1000-1500, petrol, manual, engine 2.6 litres +, into Autotrader and came up with 28 cars, most of which should be nippy. looks like the 3000GT wins the BHP prize, but there's a good few BMWs and audi/VW 2.8s there to pick from as well.

I think at £1500 for a S3 you would be buying yourself a load of trouble unless your really lucky. Most Mk1 S3 on eBay at around 1.5 to 2k look really tired. If you like A3's What about an A3 1.8T
£995 with long MOT

Mk1 MX5 or Clio 172. Haven't driven the former, but been a passenger and they're brilliant and as it's the summer perfect time to own one for a few months.

Own the latter in Cup format, and they're just incredibly fast and fun affordable little cars, would run rings around an S3. 172 Cups are just over a tonne, S3s are 1400kg+. Sorry to hear about your Polo getting stolen too!

An EP3 is also a good shout for this budget and fun factor.

At £1500? Even some of the ones for double that are ropey

Depends what you're buying I guess. I've seen some people bag some bargains on the Type R owners. And surely no worse than a £1500 S3?

You could get a few decently quick cars for the budget, few ideas:
Clio 172
Mazda RX8
BMW 325TI
BMW 328/5
Leon 1.8T
Puma 1.7
MR2 MK3
MB c/clk 230/280/320
Audi a4 2.8
TT 1.8 T
Mx5 1.8

Personally id go for the RX8, 325TI or Leon 1.8T.

Thanks guys some seriously good suggestions here.

That Pontiac would take priority just for WTF status but no way the Mrs would drive a LHD Auto!

I have seen a cheap 330ci with Xenons and the Harman Kardon in budget, it's an itch I do need to scratch. The Mrs HATES them otherwise we'd be buying an E46 M3 when we get paid out,

But it's only for a few months! biggrin

The S3 has a complicated Quattro system and a Haldex diff, the EP3 is a VTEC shoved in a Hatchback body

Therefore the S3 is more of a risk than an EP3 at this budget.

Agreed, if one could be had for the budget it's a much much safer bet than a knackered old S3!

172 Clio is the answer
RX8 for £1500 is too risky
325TI too heavy and slow
Leon 1.8T slower than Clio

MK2 MR2 T-Bar.

Not sure if you get a Turbo for £1500 but if you do....
