Hello all,

Looking for recommendations for the best double cab pick up available second hand for £4-5K. Some off road, mostly on-road. Do quite a lot of miles, so a bit of comfort would be good! Not needed to carry heavy loads on a regular basis.

Also want to have a "lid" on the open back bit, to lock items away from prying eyes.

Thanks!

A mate has a Mitsubishi L200 and he will only get rid of it when it dies. It's a full-on workhorse for him though, but does the 100 mile round trip between him and his folks very happily. Put some BF Goodrich All-Terrain's on and you can get yourself out of some pretty mucky situations.

If you can put up with an older vehicle, then a Toyota Hi-Lux is all you need.

Thanks.

The one in the link looks good (but why a new engine....?)

I'm surprised there haven't been more replies to this thread confused

What sort of off roading and how many miles a month on roading?

The biggest issue with the Jap trucks is they are compromised. They look great and can be good, but set your expectations.

- they are a truck, not a car. So they'll ride, handle and steer like a truck.

- they actually aren't great off road, a long way behind a Land Rover or Jeep. Largely due to suspension travel, flex and overhangs.

- because they are a truck they won't ride like a car, so likely not as comfy.

- because it's Europe/UK trucks tend to be quite small with compromised pay laods and towing abilities and tiny engines.

Sadly £4-5k won't get you much of a Yank truck, but they are much better than any of the Jap trucks at being a truck. Better engines, spec and size and often not much difference in fuel either.

Pick up Land Rovers are great too and exceed the Jap trucks in off road ability and largely better on road too.

That said I do like Hilux's, but leaf suspension and they can rust. The L200's look great, but certainly not as capable.

Does it need to be a pick up?

These would be an interesting alternative if not.

If your are set on a pickup them for 4-5k I'd get a ranger as you'll get most for your money but if you are not going to be carrying a load then I'd just opt for a regular 4x4. Having had a ranger, l200 and 2 hilux as work vehicles over the last 7 years I feel they are really only suitable as work horses. They are noisy and bouncy at motorway speed, lacking in on-road performance and not great for mpg. They can hold their own offroad but if you don't plan on carrying a few hundred kg of kit and towing something a 4x4 would be far better. £5k would get you a decent jeep grand cherokee, a nissan petrol or a shogun.

Hi - I have a great Nissan Navara 2006 double cab, monster wheels/jacked up suspension....bought 2020 ...finally failed MOT 2024 (needs some welding on back axle) ..bought for £3.5k and have had many times that in fun...haven't bothered to repair ...donating to the heros at Cars4Ukraine (Slava Ukraini!) - might save someones life!
Think I might look for another but might try something a bit smaller...no doubt the L200 is - from an engineering standpoint - a great buy.
