I personally prefer the F segment luxury super saloons, in something like an E class the nicer trim and furry alcantara steering wheel never entirely distracts me from the fact that it has rather prosaic minicab spec 2.0d underpinnings with an interior to match; I'd rather the very expensive version of an expensive car than the expensive version of a cheap car, if that makes sense.

It's the left field choice, but I've currently got an XJ Supersport as the sensible family car and it's a fabulous thing, unbelievably sharp to drive for such an enormous car and the low weight for it's class is evident in the way it drives. I find the power delivery of a supercharged engine greatly preferable to a turbocharged one too.

I use it hard and although it's my 2nd daily it does quite a lot of miles, but I've had absolutely no issues in 12 month and 15,000 miles of running, 23mpg average. Having poked about more under the bonnet of my XKR they're easy enough to work on when they break, parts are very modest, and if you're putting yourself in the hands of 3rd parties there are plenty of decent specialists around.

I like the Audi S8 but I thought it felt like a bit of a hippo to drive in comparison, if you're after comfortable and very fast straight line stuff though it'll be as fabulous as you expect. Ageing VAG Bork also terrifies me, I've run twin turbo V12 S classes and DIYd them but I won't touch anything from the VAG stable.

Any company that uses a jackshaft and a rubber belt to drive the water pump on a 4 cylinder petrol, or a shaft to the back of the engine to drive the AC compressor on a V8 is not a company that gives a st how the car lasts outside of warranty or how expensive it is to maintain.

The car being robust to start with and easy to repair when it breaks really, really does matter on these ageing super saloons and the difference between satisfying your champagne tastes on a beer budget and ending up with very bitter memories indeed in no small part comes down to being canny about bork potential when you buy.

Audi S6 or E63, I've had an S6 and it was a great luxury cruiser. They're pretty reliable and just check its had the turbo oil strainer recall done from Audi. If not you can get it done for free. Their V8 twin turbo, usually full of carbon inside and have air suspension that can be lowered. I lowered mines, changed the wheels and put an Rs6 grill on and it looked great.

I used the below picture for inspiration and had the Rs6 grill below and wheels.

I am definitely wanting a luxury large saloon - even the M5 is smaller than I'd like tbh
my 2 personal faves are the s8 and XJ so anyone with experience of these please please comment
I don't need amazing handling just a nice bit of straightline muscle and a rumble and some luxury

I do love that Lexus came up with the idea of adding a hybrid system to a 5 litre V8.
