A 3series estate isn’t exactly an ESTATE car.
They've never been huge in any generation, but they're useful enough in terms of capacity for a do-everything car that still drives nicely.

Thanks for the above thoughts and suggestions. The R class is a bit mpv for us, and I am unsure on the Volvo but may investigate it further.

Watching vag technic videos on the 3.0 put me off them. It’s a shame as they are good cars.
I'm guessing these videos are on YouTube? What's the main take away point in them?

Timing chains .... its an engine out job, usually involves cams too. From what they have posted it seems the end bearing cam pulley end is not lubricated other than what gets thrown about and drips on it. But no dedicated oil feed as such. Partley down to how the oil pump operates in the name of economy and regulations. It seems they can carry out a software tweak to up the pressure.

Thanks.

Reliability wise the CLS Shooting Brake is starting to appeal, even if RWD...

I think it’s a rare example of a mainstream manu producing a daring that actually works. They have tons of presence. I might have gone for one but the boot lip puts me off - I fully use the E class estate too often.

A set of all seasons is a compromise worth thinking about, I’d say. (Yes, it’s easy to spend other peoples money! Hope all works out, whatever you choose.

I really like these and like you would have considered one if I didn’t need the added space of the estate. MB are replacing rear subframes for free. They did mine without any quibble (s212) although how long they will continue to do so I don’t know

Yep, maybe Mrs Nobrakes will be getting a CLS shooting brake next.
