Amusing that a Q7 is a 'footballer's car' but a RR isn't. HEH

Threads like this are amusing - you want a RR, whether it is the 'best' tool for the job or not. So just go buy one.
You don't sound amused to be honest.

However judging by your profile you are clearly a fellow cricket fan so I will shoulder arms.

Howzat?

PS the RRS is a footballers car, RR not IMHO

He wasn't sure what he wanted, he had ideas, asked for comments and suggestions on a car enthusiasts forum and narrowed it down to a RR, most replies were helpful.

Isn't this what PH is all about?

Completely agree about RRS. Flash not Class.

I've really not wanted to say this, because it will bite me. Ours is a 06 100k miles and so far other than a £300 fuel pump that I knew was scheduled to break has not put a foot wrong.

I've bloody done it now.

I think you need a sense of humour to consider an LR product, but the driving impression is wonderful. Do you want to be in the RR or wishing you'd bought one....

Range Rover all the way.

I bet even the wife will allow herself a smug grin whenever you guys waft quietly past all these silly people in their small hatchbacks hehe

Nothing offers the warm fuzzy feeling you get when driving a Range Rover as it's literally a massive fk you to the eco-mentalists hehe

+1 for the Touareg.

We had both a Mk 1 2.5 tdi (with remap) & then a 3.0 tdi for SWMBO & did 45k miles in the first & 37k miles in the 2nd both over about 20 months each & for the money we liked the uncomplicated motoring/reliability & also the warm glow that we'd got a better car for the age / money which also handled at the time much better than its LR equivalent (& my old man was a LR dealer for a number of years till he retired so I had a lot of LR brain washing as a kid).

We would have a 3rd Touareg if we could justify it smile

I've had both (V8 FFRR and Tdi Altitude spec Touareg). To be honest, I'd buy either again, as they are both lovely trucks. However, they are quite different. The FFRR offers effortless wafting, whereas the Twig is more car-like and nimble to drive. To be honest, as good as the FFRR was, I always felt like something expensive was about to let go in a big way

My vote is for the Toerag, I drove one recently and was very impressed. I love the RR TDV8 but it commands quite a premium. Have you thought about the new Discovery Sport?

In 19 months of ownership of our Touareg 13 of those were spent at various vw dealers being repaired with all manner of issues, the total of which if not covered under warranty would have easily determined its fate.
I also found it`s off road or very poor weather ability leaving much to be desired.
when it seemed finally fixed I used it in anger the first time and got stuck in snow that a lady in a ford Kuga breezed through.
I borrowed a manual 2006 Disco3 tdv6 to tow it out and ending up buying that actual car and selling the Touareg after covering a grand total of what seemed to be about 500 yards in 19 months.

The disco had various issues in its hard time with us,turbo, wishbones, wheel bearings and the exhaust crossover pipe split, rear door lock, brakes and egr valves.
It`s not as nice on the road but its ability as a 4x4 is in a different league to a touareg in my opinion and based on my experience a more sturdy/reliable product.
Our 2009 one has apart from a remote fob issue been reliable,
The guy we bought it form replaced it with a 2010/11 FFRR 3.6v8 that has needed an alternator and battery so far.
Not keen on the digital dash but asides from that they are a much nicer thing than either of the above, just waiting for him to replace thatsmile.

Interesting thread chaps, the responses don't all tally up with what I would have assumed at all. I've always thought a Range Rover was a mad as buying a TVR and you needed a Mechanic on speed dial.

I would also have assumed the Toureg was like a big Golf, clearly not the case.

Prompted by this thread I looked at Toyota 4x4 prices, they do seem to hold up well, lots of 6figure mileage vehicles with 5 figure prices I wouldn't have expected.

I recently sat in a L322 V8 petrol on a forecourt, it is a Very nice place to be inside but the underside and engine bay didn't match up with the age IMO, it looks "old" underneath, (perhaps due to the engineering style LR use)

On the other hand I have a Toyota van which at its last service (130K) the mechanic on handing the key back said- "I think its run-in now ;-)" Despite living its whole 13yr life at the seaside its rust free and hasn't had a single major mechanical part changed, if the Land Cruiser is like that the prices might be justified.

From my experience of both, this hits the spot. The Touareg is better to drive, whereas the RR is great for riding in.

As far as the Touareg goes the V8 is quick and very torquey but feels nose heavy when pushing on, the V6 feels more agile even though it's slower. The Mk2 Touareg is also much lighter than the old shape which helps with the agility. For an off-road bias then seek out an Escape, the diffs have more adjustability.

If either of these go wrong, its gonna cost you a bomb.

Tourag will be better on fuel, hold its value for longer & has more towing capability's. Highly un reliable automatic gearbox in those can be costly but overall a great vehicle

RR has more road presence, cheaper parts, more available parts, more online information and a beautifully smooth ride. Downsides are they are very unreliable, (talking the 02 models onwarsds) air suspension problems, steering rack problems and everyone hates you on the road if you drive one etc

I am a massive VW fan but if I had the cash id go RR any day because im a flash git and i like that stuff

Can you be clear on which Touareg you mean as the Mk2 has the ZF 8-speed which is fitted to a massive spread of cars, including a few LR/RRs

If i was you, my money would end up somewhere like this. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
Not the "proper" landcruiser (in most markets its a "prado"), but will do everything you want with nearly all the landcruisers reputation for reliability.
