Lexus 400 or Jag XJ8
Discussion
AmitG is right in that Jap cars tend to less pamapered - but then they can take far more abuse?- although a neglected Lexus does not make it desirable per se.
Yes there are plenty of blinged Lexuses- but there are plenty of unmolested ones aswell(from the ones i 've seen in classifieds) -they are not the minority suggested
Personally i'd be happy with either

Would choose a Lexus. The Jag might be a 'better' driver in terms of involvement, but there is something in the design detail of the LS Lexus of all variants that has the competition beaten. It won't set the world alight with dynamic flair, but it will more than make up for it in pleasing complete efficiency. It's about knowing something is at it's core, a rock solid design made by people who set out to do just that.
I've been completely surprised how much I've fallen for my LS400. As DMN says above, it is the quality and depth of the detailed engineering. And the refinement is addictive. It is not an Elise to steer, but has great grip, and the acceleration with the PWR button pushed down is addictive. 25-28mpg (it is a Mk 4 and I think the VVTi makes a difference here).
Gold wheels though so bling-tastic!
Also, nothing has gone wrong in 7000 miles in 3 months.

Go for the Lexus....the Jag will just breakdown, fall to bits and cost you a fortune to own/run.
done over 150k in smokers, 75% in jags at a guess. Lowest mileage when purchased on a jag, about 145k and total costs of non-routine maintaince including parts - £35 approx for a couple of ebay coid packs and £60 for an air con recharge. Brakes and tyres last ok, had a couple of bulbs go and replaced a windscreen wiper and that is it. In my experience, people who warm they will go wrong don't actually have much experience with the cars.V8 Junkie said:
Picking up a 2003 XJ8 SE 4.2 auto tomorrow, time will tell if it is the right decision.Bought with my heart instead of my head!(no change there then) I upped the stakes a bit because of low miles (35000)FSH and my favourite colour sea frost. Many thanks for all your replys
Congratulations mate. Nice colour, too.AL500 said:

Spoken like a man who has never owned a Jag. I had a X300 XJ6 ran it for over a year as a daily driver and it never missed a beat, Still question why I sold it all the time, Will own a XJR soon.
Same as any car of that vintage buy on condition and just take some time to find the right example.
I like the reliability of the Lexus but the styling just leaves me a little cold where as the Jag still looks like a much better styled car and the magic carpet ride is next to none and they still turn heads.
Thats just my 2p worth of course

Congratulations OP, pics please You have bought an X350 XJ. I think that most of the "unreliable" comments around Jags applied to the earlier models (X300 and X308). I'm not aware of any significant issues with the X350 but the folks on the Jaguar forum will have the full lowdown.
If you don't mind me asking - how much did you pay?

Hello and welcome to the 2012 Booker Literary Awards, sponsored by Pistonheads and presented by me, The Crack Fox. Yes, I've had a drink, it's a free bar. This year we have a veritable cornucopia of literary wonders to choose from, but the Judge's firm favorite seems to be the two-fingered typist 'SCRR' with his seminal work on an unusual subject, an insightful and entertaining view of the automotive world, covering the ownership of a graceful, reliable and ultimately hugely rewarding large motor car. Based on his/her/it's own personal experiences, backed up with facts, figures, photos and amusing anecdotes, this weighty tome details technical nuances, ownership experiences, and general joy de vivre of one of automotive history's most evocative and successful marques. And a big Toyota. Without further ado, please join me in warm appreciation of this year's winner...
Here here! Bravo SCRR said:
