You realise that the Passat is nowhere near the most efficient production ICE car produced so it's far from the best case scenario. What would be the efficiency in miles/kWh of any production EV driving the same route at 55mph?
Model 3 LR will get 5 miles per kWh at 55 mph, probably not in winter though.
I travelled from Staffordshire to Sittingbourne and back on Friday, 420 mile round trip, in my I4. I achieved 4.8miles /kWh. That was at normal motorway speeds with an hour of stop start traffic due to hold ups. If I had tried I am sure I could tip 5 miles/kWh easily.
Would you have preferred to do it in a diesel sticking to max 55mph to keep the fuel consumption down?
Definitely not.

All I'm fussed about at the moment is the fact my fkng nissan leaf has cost me about the same in depreciation over the last 12m as it would have done to lease a new lotus eletre.

I love an EV but they are financial suicide at the moment, unless you want to buy a 5yr old nissan leaf!
Or just keep to zero and then it doesn't matter.

Through a shopping centre it's probably quite exciting.

Thats the thing though, 55mph and AC off in summer, 55mph and no heating in the winter, for a car to be an improvement it needs to match whats currently acheived.

Most Tesla drivers, from my trips on the motorway ( the speed anyway).

We must drive on different motorways then. Fair play for being able to see what they’re doing with their cabin temps from outside…..

It's a pretty massive display screen to be fair. biggrin

We do get an awful lot of crawlers out here in the Cotswolds and they're one of the common brands to see in the middle lane of the M40 travelling slower than either of the other lanes. As to why they're travelling so slowly could be down to multiple reasons from being old, being on a tight budget, not having much car or driving experience, just being one of the new wave of drivers who like to sit in the middle lane going slower then L1. I wouldn't immediately assume it was a specific 'range' thing as Tesla's not only have good range but the simplest of recharging networks and few will be in the middle of epic, cross country drives but statistically just carrying out normal journeys where there's no need to alter one's driving style to eek out miles. To be honest, I suspect Tesla drivers you see driving in this manner have always done so and prior to buying the Tesla we're just doing exactly the same with things like diesel BMWs and the Tesla is the better tool for that particular way of driving.

When it comes to just crawling in the middle lane seemingly deliberately wanting to inconvenience all around them, travelling below the speed limit on single carriage ways and then speeding through 30s, it's a person specific thing but you do notice some types of cars as appearing more prevalent such as crossovers or minis (Minis being a very odd one as on PH they appear to be popular drivers cars but on the road a bit of a poster boy vehicle for people who genuinely can't drive).

Can't say this matches with anything I've seen on the many motorway trips I've done in SE England.

I had 240 mile round trip to do this weekend, and knowing it wasn't really onto the realms of running out of charge I was able to drive very uneconomically. Lots of cruising at 85-95 on clear roads, plenty of acceleration to get back up to cruising speed, and AC blasting cold. Basically the worst case scenario for EV summer economy.

Arrived home to plug in with a predicted 35 miles range remaining, so roughly 275 miles driving like a knob against the 330-340 I get when driving a bit more carefully. Really not that bad, and much better than I'd expected.

One thing it did bring into sharp relief was how much less relaxing that style of driving is than kicking it over to the adaptive cruise at a max of 78, which is my usual MO on long journeys. On balance the difference it made to my overall journey time was probably negligible, but being in a bit of a hurry on the outbound leg meant we had no choice.

Current fleet - Toyota Avensis

I assume that’s an ironic garage.
That's the pinnacle of ice cars right there. That's the sort of thing we should all aspire to as attainable, fun daily motoring. Imagine the sheer delight of stroking it through the gears and listening to that sweet engine, while the chassis flows beautifully across a challenging B-road commute.

It will be a dark day for car enthusiasts when we're no longer able to buy a Toyota Avensis.

My take to summarise the above might be that, some, if they're a bit of a bell piece then behave like a bit of a bell piece across a whole number of activities simply because they're a bit of a bell piece without much self awareness. Such activities could include, but is not limited to, diverse activities such as driving and posting on social media.

whistle

For the benefit of the tape etc...

PS ,More seriously, DA, hope your Mrs is getting over the recent 530D encounter. Wasn't near an American base was it?

I've seen this comment a few time, yet when ever i see a Tesla they just seem to be driving like any other car.

Not just any Avensis though, but the much-loved 'Auto' which, if I'm not mistaken, is diesel only.

To savour the race bred diesel engine as she soars through the rev range to the heady 4000rpm limit?

I am sure you would. You would probably pick any Avensis against any EV. No doubt.
