You don't need a special ticket for the pit walkabout, but they will want to see your general entrance ticket. Last year you went in by the lower entrance as usual but went out at the top. We walked all the way back down only to be told we needed to go back to the top. They can be a bit jobsworth at times.
According to the official ACO programme I have, pitwalk times are as follows:
Wednesday.....14:00 to 16:00
Thursday......14:00 to 16:00
Friday........10:00 to 20:00
Saturday......12:00 to 13:00
The programme idictates the tickets are E 460. It also says that the ticket is valid for the whole of the week of the 24 Heures. This means the pitwalk is not free. What is free is access to the support paddock and the times for these are:
Wednesday.....09:00 to 23:59
Thursday......09:00 to 20:00
Friday........09:00 to 20:00
Saturday......no access
Hope this helps.

I had a quick look at the ACO website. The ticket you are talking about gives access to the pit at certain extra times and paddock throughout the race week, including during the race by the look of it. And, as you say, costs €460.
I reckon the pit walk on Friday, as ever, is free and open to anyone with a general entrance ticket, all day (10am to 8pm). That's how it's always been in the past.

BlueST,
You're probably right. I've never done the pitwalk myself so I'm not sure about these things. Maybe the ACO programme should be really explicit!! Maybe you need to be French to understand it.

It's really not clear, as you say. maybe they do it on purpose to give the whole thing more of a sense of adventure for us foreigners. Whichever way it is €460 is a serious wedge for access to the paddock. You're probably right. I've never done the pitwalk myself so I'm not sure about these things.
