Remember that if you're using the tunnel they allow you an hours grace, even on the cheapest tickets so you don't have to stress about making your train, it'll probably be full anyway!
My plan is to take it easy on the way down (famous last words!)
I'd rather not give 'them' the satisfaction of turning our weekend into a cash generating oppertunity.

There's a problem with the hour's grace. If you miss your check in time you will go on the next available train. On exceptionally busy days this can mean a very long wait if subsequent trains are fully booked..last year if you were booked on the Monday afternoon, as many Le Maners were, and if you were late, as many Le Maners were due to delays at the peages and road works near Le Tunnel entrances, then the next available train was more than 6 HOURS later unless you wer lucky opn the wait list! Don't ask how I know this!
I suspect that, as usual, the Friday morning trains from the UK will not be too busy, most Le Maners have gone in the days before, but this is not the case coming back on Monday afternoon.
