If it was Marc Gene he's fractured a toe and is a bit shook up but should be back on form ready for the race. According to a story I read earlier.

He's lucky it's not a golf course though. Look at the great big divot he takes out the grass as he exits the track... And I dont see him trying to put it back.

Scary stuff, much the same story as Ortelli at Monza.

Even with the latest regs these things still take off when the angle of attack is unconventional - and as long as the basic design/regs remains similar we will continue to see flying prototypes...

Apparently the car is a total write off, dislocated toe and bad bruising for Gene.

The Ferrari that smacked the wall causing the other big incident of the day seemingly will miss the race as the damage is too great to get it back together.

Peugeot are going to have to dip into their spares resources and apply to the ACO to use a different chassis, although I don't imagine the ACO will take long to authorise a French manufacturers application to change chassis

Either way the parts bin is going to look a little more empty come race weekend for the Peugeot's . . . shame

Probably nothing !! Pescarolo was nearly killed by his Matra M640 looping the loop on the Mulsanne in 1969 and the basic design/shape of the cars has changed very little in the following 40 years (unlike a Lotus 49B against this year's McLaren for example!).

So they're relatively wide,flat-bottomed and pitch sensitive. This accounts for airborne Mercs, Saubers, Porsche GT1's, Courages, Jaguars etc over the years.

If a driver suffers *only* a fractured toe after such an accident, I'd say there's not too much more you can do to improve safety...

According to the new 3D map on the ACO website the location is Virage Corvette - but yes, in essance, it is part of the (previously named) Porsche curves.

Although I completely agree and there is obviously little to no reason to chage things for safety's sake. You know how sports governing bodies are and want to be seen as doing something to stop it happening in future. IMO the rules are fine, but the ACO will probably still want to change something to seem proactive.

Gene's incident looks a bit like the Dumbreck incident in a Mercedes SLK GTR on Mulsane Straight some years back (1999?). That was the most spectacular crash I can recall, not that I like to see crashes at all. R

Cars getting airborne seems to be back in 2008, so I guess something will be done as quickly as possible to either slow or change airflow under cars.
