I bpught mine from Macro's.
Took it this year, it sits inside the wedge roll bar perfectly. great for keeping your sarnies and beer cool when driving, and makes a good table when stopped.

How well do those things work? As well as a fridge you'd have at home? As well as a regular cooler with a handful of ice cubes? Somewhere in between?

What do you do? Start your car every couple of hours to recharge the battery? I thought about getting one, but was worried about how efficient or practical they are...

I used one last year, and ran the car battery flat! You need to actually take the car for a drive to re-charge the battery. Not only that but on many cars the socket doesn't work if the ignition is off.

I bought a portable fridge for the french grand prix, and took it to Le Mans. It uns on gas, mains or the car, and works well. So well it froze the beer at a Hovercraft meet in May! Mind you was about £250!

I bought one in Le Mans this year for about 50 euros, had it on overnight in the hotel and the drinks were still at a good temp at 9pm the following day

I just spent a year 4x4ing across Australia and out there they all use fridge freezers in the back of the truck. These are 12V/240V (and sometimes gas) which means you can charge them at home on the mains over night. You need a duel battery set up to run them properly but could maybe get away with a single battery for short periods (and a battery minder).

The biggest brand was Engel. I forget the names of the other brands. They were all selling for about $1000 each (£350). Does anyone know if/where you can get them or something similar over here?

Instead of a dual battery set up the other option is to use one of those flat-battery-starter packs when the car isnt in use.
