Griff - why take the hood?

Me and the girl plus stuff and tent and beer and spares and beer and airbed and beer and I guess some clothes and food... but it ain't all going to fit well in the Griff. So I'm looking at how I can save some space and I'm thinking if the weather's good, who needs a roof section? Bit of plastic to keep the rain and sun off while parked up should do it. I'm a Le Mans newbie - is this idea Sane or Stupid?

Don, pack everything you need except the beer, that should all fit in, then when you arrive, unload, get the girlie to pitch the tent (first time it is her doing it - fnaar fnaar) and go and get some beer in the nice empty boot - sorted!!

given that the year before last was a torrential piss down from start to finish, and that beer is about half the price in France I would advise to take the roof.

all you need is a tent, couple of sleeping bags a change of clothes you can buy the rest at the hypermarket when you get there.

Theres one not fare from Houx and Houx annexe, cant remeber wether it was a Decathlon/Carrefour but there are a few in Le Man Town and This one i said near the Track.

Le Mans is like a big French City, theres like a load of them....how about just outside the top end of the circuit?

I've got a Griff too.

Leave the spare at home, if you have to use the space saver you won't have room to carry the wheel you've taken off anyway. Just buy a one of those tyre repair cans from Halfords instead.

I drove down with the hood up last year, worth cooking for the extra room, once you're there you can clear out the boot and go topless again.

Carrefour is about 2 miles north of the circuit, directions are in autosport guide, dont take anything you cant get in the supermarket, even airbeds in there are a tenner!

the long term forecast is for thunderstorms on thu/fri so take the roof!

Dont rely on the supermarket or indeed the region having any 1)sleeping bags 2)airbeds 3) tents 4) BBQ or barbeque charcoal 5) Cool boxes

Oddly all these things seem to be in scarce supply.

you should be able to get all you need in the boot even with the roof down. remember there is plenty of room on the shelf behind your seats.

And if its blazing hot the whole weekend you'll be glad of the roof to keep the dust out while parked in the campsite.

There is a D-type that goes every year (never seen one with a roof!) also an MGA twin cam with no roof.....etc
If you are brave and keep you foot down you can go with out. Just need the British stiff upper lip
Or save space and get the tent e.t.c. for the super market down there!

If you're happy to drive in any potential rain, I guess you could get a roof-only cover to keep the car dry, clean and away from prying eyes the rest of the time. I'd imagine they pack up quite small, but I'm not speaking from experience.

I'm taking my roof - not that it makes any difference as water pisses in anyhow - but might keep the drops from my eyes if it rains whilst were driving

I went one year in a frogeye ('89 I think) without any roof or tonneau. Just drove above 50 when it rained. If you have to slow down put the umbrella up.

yep well mines a '67 Midget - frankly the umbrella is a good idea as I never go fast enough to have problems with the wind blowing it away

how fast do you have to go to disperse a little water?

The weather forecast is not too good for the
journey down there - so unless you are a
ex caterham owner then I think you might just
need the roof.

Get rid of the spare wheel though for extra
beer space.
