We've decided this year to miss the mad hangover induced rush back on monday this year and are comming back via cherbourg ( at about 11.30am ) on the tuesday. with the idea of a leasurly drive to somewhere near the port on monday and a gentle chill out night on monday before a quick trip to the hypermarket and the ferry home on tuesday morning.

a decent campsite or maybe a travelinn type place would be fine..

any suggestions

A Villages-hotel would have to be my suggestion.

www.villages-hotel.com

There's one in Caen which should do the job nicely for you.

They're cheap (£20 a room), clean and comfortable and they're usually within spitting distance of a decent steak house.

John

We did this last year, going home via Dieppe.

I recommend Arromanches - on the beaches of the Normandy landings east of the Cherbourg peninsula. It's a bit south of Cherbourg but this is where they created a huge man-made harbour which was towed across the channel and sunk off the coast a bit. Went for a swim and they make good diving platforms!! Nice to finally get a wash as well. We stayed in a local hotel, 2 to a room for about 20 euro each.

Looks like a good spot but a bit far for the tuesday morning....

it may have to be the F1 at Cherbourg less than 20 quid for the room !!!

there must be a bar or two in cherbourg and somewhere reasonable to get some nosh...

Sorry to chip in a bit late in the thread but the Formule1 hotels are cheap because they don't have ensuite.

I prefer to spend a few extra quid to avoid sharing facilities!

Cheers

LOL - we will just have spent 1 night sleeping in the car, and 3 nights sleeping in tents and pg in bushes, the fact that they have beds will be a major plus, i dont much care if we have to use a bucket for everything else

There's an F1 just north of Rouen which is about halfway to the coast, we've stopped there on the Sunday night the past couple of years. After a week in a tent it is the height of luxury.
