Which is the best sounding Le Mans car?
Discussion
Firstly
1993 Pantera, the bright orange one. It sounded fantastic, from Cafe Des Hunadiere you could hear it come through Tetre Rouge, up through the gears and past you flat out. Then down shift through the first chicane and head off to the next.
Secondly
McLaren F1, this was the most unique sounding car I have ever heard. It was fantastic and you could hear it all night in the rain with JJ Lehto, who was lapping 28 seconds faster than anyone else on the circuit.
Thirdly
The Mazdas, now they really did scream - Awesome.

What with that and the scream on the MClaren! A totally awesome sound.
Just maybe, and it's a maybe at the moment, if asked the same question come June the 17th, the answer just might be............TVR!!!

Some of the Le Mans Legends are amazing.
I missed the McLaren F1s as I didn't start going until '99. I bought a CD of Le Mans sounds a couple of years ago and that had the F1 on - and it did sound awesome. My neighbours must wonder what on earth is going on when I put the CD on and turn my stereo right up.
Some of the modern Ferraris sound good - but they are in the same vein as the Judd engines which I reckon beat them for high pitched scream.

Of course which ever car it is, the best place to listen has to be in the trees along the exit of Mulsanne corner. In the dark. You can hear it coming flat out down the straight, in a blur it's a blaze of lights past you and then you hear it up through every gear and flat out again for what seems like ages before Indianapolis miles down the dark road.
Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
And that's why you go back year after year.

Yes, there's very good, but I like it at Arnarge/Indianapolis, before they cut the trees on the other side of the track back further.
Hard one ... the origional Panoz was awsome, the F1 GTR was also memorable .. 03:30 on the pit straight .... what a sound.
The ML600 was a beast too. 6 litres of good old V8 roar.
incidently the new MG doesnt sound half bad late into the night.
Iltimate sound though has to be the GT40's

Would that be the landing strip they cut out for the Mercedes ?
Almost. I was exactly here in '99 when the merc flipped. You can't see it from here - it was about 1/2 a mile before here on the outfield. We'd head on Radio Le Mans about what had happened and tried our best to get close enough to see, but to no avail.
