You may have seen this in the news "Brittany Ferries blames Brexit for huge drop in passengers", as if worldwide energy prices, inflation, Ukraine and the "sinking below the Dollar" Euro are all our fault.

This is just a heads up, in yet more strange times. I doubt that Dover will be affected, but it looks like there may be problems/cancellations on the longer routes. But then it may all be over before Christmas laugh

I blamed Brexit for our kettle blowing up after I forgot to put any water in it and left the lid open. Watching a mountain stage of the TdF on the tele at the time so thought I had a reasonable excuse, think I got away with it.

We will be going DFDS next June, if we get a camping pitch that is, and that will be on the Sunday before the race. They've put a couple of new boats on the Dover Calais route, which have been uncrowded the three times we've been across and back recently.

It could be down to what Brittany Ferries are charging. We looked at crossing Poole to Cherbourg during next summer holidays and they wanted £780 return, no cabin or seats.

For what they charge for a car and caravan, you can have a fortnight for two in Benidorm.

The recent EU rules on emissions, means that they can't use ordinary ship oil as its full of sulphur (now you know where it went when they made low-sulphur diesel), so they've bought new boats/installed catalysts/converted to LPG etc which with Covid means they've had a really hard time. P&O gave up on the long crossings over 10 years ago, but Britney is a real survivor

Came back to UK overnight on Brittany Ferries from Caen. I have a house in Normandy so do the crossing 4/5 times each year. My favourite ferry company!

I love the portsmouth caen route as its just over 2 hours of driving all in.

But the costs are silly.

DFDS want 20% of the return Brittany ferry price for the Newhaven - Dieppe.

Its a 4 hour sailing vs a 5h but several hundred difference.

Why can dfds do it much cheaper?

Newhaven Dieppe is/was heavily subsidised by the French local Govt to keep jobs in Dieppe.
I remember an article 4-5 yrs ago about it and I think it was in region of £10-15 k per crossing?
I think Newhaven port is also run by the French?

Brittany Ferries have good routes but the timetables suck and the Fastcraft is limited to certain ports, I have given up with them the last few years and now use P&O Dover Calais, If you plan on going back and forth to France often its worth asking for their season ticket prices for 4 crossings or more. The P&O service is not what it was since the sacking of ships crews, it takes longer loading and unloading and restaurant service has now been replaced with a club lounge with additional supplement, its ok but I preferred it how it was.
Even Driving an 8ltr V10 its still cheaper to drive from Dover to Le mans than pay the stupid prices Brittany Ferries charge!

The Portsmouth - Caen crossing to me is worth paying the extra for convenience. I use it several times a year, with and without caravan. Easy drive to Portsmouth from home - avoiding the 150 mile drive to Dover with all the horrors of the M25 is well worth the extra crossing cost.

Ferry costs with a caravan in peak season are eye watering. We've found it cheaper to fly and rent a car and gite, but there aren't many planes heading to France nowadays.

And they put that 8 litre V10 in a motorbike eek
