Yesterday a fire broke out just north of us and quickly moved towards the Hotel Arbour during the afternoon and evening. Houses at Mulsanne were evacuated and others elsewhere, and the fire was only held after 200 acres had been lost, apparently not far behind the hotel luckily. 70 fire engines, and a Canadair were operational, plus two police helicopters to report on where it was heading, and today the smell of smoke and a haze are still evident. Many roads are still closed. The fire service will keep a presence for another couple of days, so the paper says. It is already 33C and rising, having surpassed 40C yesterday, and we have had no rain since a storm before the Classic, with none forecast for another two weeks or more. Everything is so dry that other fires are to be expected.
weve had word our house is OK

'This Tuesday, July 19, around 11 a.m., the road to Saint-Germain-d'Arcé is closed to traffic. “Part of the village has no more electricity and the telephone poles are no longer in working order! This elected official came the day after the fire to see the damage caused the night before. "It's a hassle", breathes Émile Guillon, the mayor, who runs from right to left, while the Énedis teams are on site to try to restore the situation.'
id have paid good money to see the Mayor running around
'The firefighters, who left around 1 a.m. on the night of Monday to Tuesday, returned on Tuesday and are closely monitoring the surroundings of the municipal building. “About a third of the building is completely destroyed and one of the two tractors has overheated and cannot be used,” laments the municipal employee.
The wind continues to blow and raises fears of resumption of fire. “The westerly wind has turned against us,” observes a firefighter from Luché-Pringé.'
poor old Geoff the Gardener, it now means hopefully he cant screw our fence up anymore whilst mowing the Picnic area.....

We had warnings of evacuation, but the wind, which had changed from SW to NE, suddenly died. Apparently the flames jumped over the Château des Bondes and missed it entirely. Temperature now down to 28C and things have calmed down, but the smoke that arose during the afternoon was dense. In France, they say that the situation everywhere is "an apocalypse waiting to happen". Down south, one area has lost 12,000 acres of forest.
There was a big fire in Britanny yesterday, around 1,700 hectares destroyed. We were in Mayenne town which is miles away and could see and smell the smoke.
Meanwhile, back home in Fougerolles du Plessis, it's been hammering down with rain this morning. That should please the guys digging our new patio area!
