Can anybody enlighten me to how long it takes from Rouen to Le Mans following the N route not the péage?

Google maps (you can select 'avoid tolls' and 'avoid motorways') comes up with various routes, all coming in around 200km and 3.5 hours.

Seems about right from the 'olden days' of the N138.

We always stop at the truck stop by Monnai (Le Chavel Bai), they do a cracking ham and cheese baguette, which is 90 mins from Rouen.
Then regular fuel stop south of Fye which is about another 80 mins.
It's then about 50 mins to Tetre Rouge for the first pint.
No toll roads, all N138.
About 3 hours plus stops for fuel and crusty sandwich.

I’d guess upto 4 hours as passing trucks and slower cars can eat into the time.
I know the Autoroute saves 2 hou4s but the old N138 is a pleasant drive.
You can always pick up the motorway if you are getting behind schedule

D840 Le Neubourg - Breteuil - Verneuil d'Avre etd'lton
N12 - Mortagne-au-Perche
D938 - Belleme
D7 - La Ferte Bernard
D323 - Le Mans

Cracking Route, plenty of long straights with good visibility to allow you to press on whilst still enough interest & no tolls, a few twistier bits at the end. When I say long straights, I mean long, D840 has two of 7 miles and another of 5 miles. 3-4 hrs.

Whatch out for these frigging things mobile speed cameras, normally hidden in semi long grass and set back off the road (unlike the one in the pic)

Been a while since I did that kind of route but I vaguely recall we did D438 and then D338 via Alençon - slow but nice.
