This old French highway code law still exists in many old Villages (unless marked with solid white lines on the road from a right hand turning).

This article explains it well, this was also the case on some of the roads exiting the campsites, so if you are new to Driving in France read the article read
I just got back from the Burgundy region and can tell you the Law is still very much used, so be careful if driving around villages and towns!

Link not working behind a paywall

Generally applied in areas with a 30 limit and often different coloured tarmac.
There’s one that’s a bit iffy on the D307 from Arnage at Moncé en Belin. I’ve seen lots of cars go straight through even though they have give way signs

That was very helpful thank you...enough to put me of driving in fact! Very good link, worth a read to avoid steep vine or a non-payout by your insurance

The French motorway speed limit is logical and sensible (better than ours), priorite au droite is absolutely crackers

Definitely not. Read through the document. Causing an accident by failing to observe priority from the right is a fine, points on licence and many Insurance companies will refuse to pay up. Scary but thats what it says in the article

Reason I posted this up was recently I was traveling in convoy with 28 other Vipers in the Burgundy region, there were a couple of very close calls where locals pulled straight out without pausing straight into the slow moving convoy! (no accidents but it was close),

Also a PH member a few years ago had life changing injuries when driving from the Houx roundabout towards Karting Nord, a recently married French couple pulled out of the right hand turning to the Houx campsite road straight into the front of the car. it was a very, very serious accident with lengthy legal battles and hospital visits. Not to mention totalled car.

I'm not sure that this one was the one I heard about, which was - from a bad memory - something with a Hayabusa or suclike and where he let his friend take the wheel. Three years later he was still receiving medical treatment.

"Priorité à Droite" you will find in many towns including Le Mans, and there are even a few towns where the same rule applies at roundabouts too, although that is very rare. One thing that the police are very hot on is Stop signs. You physically must come to a halt, not like in the UK where we roll up and if all clear carry on. The fines are pretty hefty too. Knowing a few BiB here they are more tolerant of most things during Le Mans week, but speeding at well over the limit is not one of them.
