Virtual Le Mans
Discussion
So the ACO have confirmed the first batch of drivers and it's quite comical if you ask me.
Spot the odd one out in this list:
Not looked but guessing they will have zero damage like virtual F1/Formula E, so will just be the same dodgems/BTCC crap (though Formula E's often like that anyway, just with damage).

- Le Mans.
- 24 hours.
- Endurance racing.
- To finish first, first you must finish.
- Max Verstappen

Think I read they're having damage with time penalties if you have to be recovered to pits. Be interesting to see how that works. I might get interested nearer the time, but the virtual racing lately has not had any of my attention.
Maybe being Le Mans will make it more appealing.
I believe there is fuel, damage and tyre wear and variable weather. 4 drivers is probably just because they can in this platform, or gain more interest.
Max is a good name to have to draw in interest. He seems one of the most followed and capable with the virtual stuff lately.
Regardless of format, it’s no substitute for the real thing. I’ll see how I feel about having a themed weekend around it, or it might just make it more painful not having the real thing.

I use the sim they will be using (rFactor 2), and race in its offical Endurance League, and its the same guys who run that who will be running this. In fact we tried to enter a team into this race with two former winners of the Daytona 24, but the ACO didn't chose us. You cannot be recovered to the pits (you can in iRacing), you have to drive round if you can (with the rest of the field under a Code 80), or you're out. Repairs can take a while however.Sim Racing isn't for everyone, but the actual racing can be just as tense and exciting as the real thing for some. I intend to stick my tent up in the back garden, put on some st banging euro trance and watch it.
I'm going to give it a go. I really, really hope that they have:
Damage.
Simulated yellows for barrier repairs, as well as simulated safety car trains.
Simulated mechanical failures based on historic averages
Simulated punctures (esp near the end of a triple) and simulated damage following a puncture
Simulated pit repairs, including some sort of option of "rush it and get it going" vs "get it spot on". A car carrying damage should have reduced performance just like in the real event.
Simulated change of track conditions (2 am happy hour etc).
If they do that, then they have a virtual le mans. If it's like the IMSA sim racing I tried to give a good chance to, then I'll probably turn it off after a short while - if you're simulating endurance racing then you need to simulate it all, otherwise it's just too "computer game" and not "sim" and when e.g Pagenaud happens it's an instant turn off for me. I think the phrase often used in the movies forum "suspend disbelief" is the badger here (although i hate the phrase). If a car hits the wall at 200mph and isn't out, and / or if a car rebounds into the path of another car and it just "noclips" straight through it, then it's not a sim at all. Obviously I know why the gamers prefer to not be taken out of their race by another car spinning, but the real racers would prefer that too.
I'm sure that Strakka would have had a better 2015 if they didn't get a very friendly visit from the Rebellion that had gone off on the 911's oil, but that is all part of the event and I hope that the people arranging the iRacing event "get" that the endurance fan crowd perversely enjoy the trauma as well as the good (I assume everyone on this thread has had at least 1 moment when "their" car gets punted / loses a tyre at speed) but you can't get the emotional highs without the lows either..

There is some real 24 hour racing the weekend after next

Creventic races are normally streamed with commentary from Radio Le Mans, no word on coverage that I've seen yet though

New to e racing and a bit cynical I thought I would give it a go. Actiually found it quite enthralling so will dip in to this. Can’t see the introduction of mechanical issues being realistic as that would also seem unfair unless it’s French organised and we can then predict which teams will be ok
I'd love to be able to get into it, but rather than some cars hurtling flat out through the French countryside pitching their wares in racings most famous shop window, it will be some people sat at home with a joystick.
No sites, smells, sounds, sun, pit traumas, real weather etc. Just can't get my head into the idea, which is a shame because they're at least trying to make the best of a bad deal.
I do admire all these "from home" initiatives, everyone the world over keeping peoples spirits up - concerts, chat shows, work outs etc, but its just a last resort for me personally, I'd sooner just read a book.
I'll give the race a try just to see, hopefully it sparks a little bit of interest

My advice would be to watch it from a driver's stream rather than the full race broadcast, much more entertaining, especially if Nicki Thiim is streaming on Twitch or YouTube.
Thank you, I'll give that a try. My eldest spends time driving Le Mans on some X Box game, it is interesting, be quite different to see this knowing there is a proper race on so to speakwsn03 said:

We're planning on re-creating the Le Mans week at home. Tuesday I have case of Ruby Leffe and pizza sorted, our usual for Rouen/Deauville, Wednesday lunch is crusty French bread, ham, cheese and chips, our usual lunch stop at La Traiteur (N138). Thursday morning is full English, usually Arnage. Then for Friday/ Saturday I have 3 packs of Mergeuz ordered so will enjoy the man cave, with traditional red sausage and frites. May get the tent out for an airing and sleep in the garden as it's not been used this year with the TT cancelled, depends on weather. The virtual race is just something to keep on eye on while making a beer mountain on the lawn.Red Firecracker said:

Aye, thiim, lando norris and verstappen are.all likely to play up for the cameras on their normal streams - but will they dick about during tbis? I assume the clamps may be on somewhat...Vette_1978 said:

Wow you're going all out.Its all starting to hit home now that Moto 24 is behind closed doors. My mates son has a factory ride, im gutted - he could be doing something completely different by next year.
To compound my expected loss of Le Mans car race ... where 2 garages and one "expert" screwed up, by doing them myself the brakes on my sportscar now work properly, and I now really want to drive the thing rather than just look at it.
I really hope next year this is behind us

Many thanks for the link. If you get any info regarding live coverage and Radio LeMans, please post here.
It would be great to see some real endurance racing!!
Cheers - Tony
If anyone wants a taster, then the Offical rFactor 2 Virtual Endurance Championship is running their end of season 24 Le Mans right now:
