With the date change for obvious reasons, our group is looking at doing things a bit differently this year rather than camping in tents as usual and the idea of a caravan has suddenly gained a lot of appeal.

More room to pack camping essentials, potentially colder evenings in September and maintain ability to do the daily trip to the local supermarché for supplies!

Does anyone know of any companies in the UK preferably based in the Midlands which do self drive caravan hire including cover for use in Europe?

I've never towed a caravan, they look too jack-knifey, hired motorhomes in UK and US though, wouldn't it be easier to get a motorhome/caravan in France, then leave car(s) at hire place and shorter drive in RV or caravan? God knows what ferry or tunnel costs are with a caravan either, definitely a lot more.

Plenty of caravan dealerships around that way so they could be a good place to start. If nothing else and as you're just looking for a work horse you might be able to do a trade deal on some ratty trade in they have making things look untidy out the back, either buy it/scrap it or buy it/sell it back for a percentage of the purchase price (but less than hiring a new van for the week).

I looked at hiring one a couple of years ago as mine was delayed for collection. Hiring cost was over £2000 a week!!! For that buy one and use it sell it when you get back.

Yes ferry costs are about 40% more on top of the car price.

They are worth it but look longer term if I were you or go with a motorhome.

I was looking at doing something similar for the Moto GP, i decided the best thing to do was to buy a 3k 2 berth caravan run it for a year and then sell it. Good job i didn't buy one as I'm not sure it will go ahead this year.

I’d imagine a 3k caravan is now a 2k caravan but I guess there’s no point in investing if there’s no events to go to :-(

Thanks for all the replies and info. The two options are shaping up to be:

1) source a cheapo , buy it and bin it after the race (if it goes ahead). - On a side note is my memory playing tricks on me or can anyone else remember a group based in either houx annexe or tetre rouge that had a smallish 60’s caravan painted in the gulf livery ?

2) economy option: buy a big coat, lots of gas heaters and stay hydrated with suitable liquids

I can’t bring myself to look at buying one with a view to long term usage as it would be permanently parked up save for 1 week in June or September this year. I don’t think I could hack traditional camping in Britain with designated bbq areas, 10pm noise curfew and half decent wash facilities.

Hopefully the trusted cat gives us another positive weather forecast when the tent comes out this year

You might be better off hiring something like a VW California, try your local vw dealer or nene valley campers ...

Some panel vans can get really cold inside at night if you you don’t have the ability it heat it safely.

I speak from experience here. Often woke with ice on the inside!

If it does happen in sept then I'm sure a tent will be fine, Just make sure you have a decent sleeping bag and mat.

Have a look on Camplify - it's kinda like AirBnB for motorhomes and caravans. Should be able to rent something on there.

I took mine last year for the first time. Game changer!

A) it won't be any colder at night in Sept, if anything slightly warmer?

And....

B) It doesn't matter anyway, because the next Le Mans will probably be in June - lets hope 2021
