You can buy proper race numbers, and roundals to stick them on, from most motorsports related shops. Demon Tweaks do them, for example. Bear in mind that MSA regulations forbid competition numbers from being displayed on public roads. You can be pretty sure that any car you see on UK public roads with numbers on is driven by a wannabee rather than a competitor. From that point of view, competition numbers rate slightly below blue neon washer jets in the credibility stakes.

Maybe, BUT its for Le Mans, a bit of fun. Its not as if I'm putting them on for everyday driving, in which case I may tend to agree.

As long as you put a black line through it, you'll be fine
To clarify, there's no law against putting comp numbers on and no need to put lines through them if you do.
However, if you are a competitor wth an MSA competition license, it is a condition of the license that you don't display numbers on public roads. The numbers must be removed or completely masked off, it isn't sufficient to put a line through them. If you're seen on the road with numbers on and reported to the MSA, your license may be revoked. Now people don't go round looking for competition numbers and call up the MSA hotline, but if you're seen leaving an event with the numbers on you may be reported. Competitors tend to comply with this rule so if you see race numbers on the road it's most unlikely that it is driven by a race driver.
So sticking race numbers on is fine if you're on a long trip to a race meeting and want like minded fans to recognise you. But if you do it just because you think it looks cool and people will think you're a racing driver, be aware that actually it is saying exactly the opposite to anyone who is actually involved in motorsport.
