Thought this would be useful info:

1) All E111 forms expired in December 2004 (regardless of when you got yours) so you will need to get a new one before June.

2) French authorities are introducing an additional 600 fixed speed cameras in 2005, but at the same time halving the penality if you exceed the limit by up to 20kph. Have a guess where they are concentrating the installation of new cameras between now and June.

3) France is upgrading it's entire Chip & PIN network so UK C&P cards will work in more and more places. However Petrol stations, in particular the 24/24 ones, will likely not be upgraded until the legal deadline of 2007. Make sure there's someone with a French bank account in your convoy

Hope this was useful

why would you need a french bank account we had no problems last year using our cards without chip and pin, they just swipe them as normal

Because it's a bugger to find a *manned* petrol station on a Sunday afternoon in rural France!

Handy hint - make sure your tank is brim full of petrol before you get to the campsite, then there's plenty to get you as far as the Sunday night drinking stop.

The golden rule we have always followed is to fill the tank before 5pm every day. That makes for a hassle free trip.
Can't wait!

So then, the French plod might not be as smart as they might like to think. Let’s put our extra bushy tails on and make with the pointy ears, lets make like the fox, its cunning time!

We know that using a radar detector carries the likelihood of having both the device destroyed and fined £500 but no points on my licence. We all know this as a bad thing or do we?

Now Le Plod is putting up speed cameras which will put points on my licence and a fine, in my book a very bad thing and worse than having a detector destroyed and a £500 donation to Plods back pocket

I deduce therefore that it is now worthwhile using a detector to stand the best chance of not having Le Plod getting points on my licence.

E111 is a very useful doc - especially when much drinking is going on.

It proves your entitlement to basic medical treatment under EU reciprocal agreement i.e. you get access to the French National Health if you can present your E111. Think A&E etc. without worrying if your insurance covers it.

It's free, just grab a leaflet from the Post Office, fill in the form and get it stamped.

Just used ours in France, must add this only Covers 80% of your hospital cover etc, YOU need Insurance to cover the other 20% in the unlikely event you have to use it.

V5 is a must, because if you break down and cannot repair they can't repatriate your car without it.

Would also agree that an E111 doesn't replace insurance, if you needed to be shipped back (imagine spinal injury and specialised transport etc etc) you need insurance.
