For me it has to be down at Hanundiers after dark on the Saturday night. After the Chinese being able to stand up on the wall looking at the cars on Mulsanne is absolutely fantastic.
Unfortunately it now seems ever more the case that the French police are hell bent on ruining things with their over zealous policing. Last year one of our crew got taken away by the police for standing on the wall watching the race, unfortunately for them he carries full diplomatic immunity and 'Jean-Claude Le Plod' had him back in the 993 in under 5 minutes

Best place ever for me was from up in the trees on the Mulsanne.
Right above the cars doing 240 clicks, stunning
up in the trees? did you climb up them? i had a look at a map of the track and decided on a mission through the mass expanse of trees next to the mulsanne for the early hours of the morning to see the cars down there, in the end it was bloody freezing and i couldnt be arsed! went to the first chicance on the track instead! (sorry for not knowing the name) mind you it was 4am!
i had a look and all the paths to the mulsanne straight seemed to have roadblocks there, is their like a spectators route to go to view the straight? or was everybody doing it on the sly i know there are the viewing stands at the corner just before the straight, but couldnt see anywhere to view the actual straight

the barriers and thought we'd be less likely to be spotted up in the trees.
This was back in the late 80's with the Jags thundering by.
Came back down just before dawn, awesome, just wish I'd had a video camera back then.
Don't think my wife would be up for the same trek now, might have to try though..

hell i'd be up for that, sounds like a cool adventure!! not terrifically great at climbing trees but it would be great fun!
Arnage for me too. Stayed there from before nightfall until 6am last year. By then we were so damn cold we were shivering involuntarily and quite embarrasingly! Note to self: take an extra fleece this year!
Esses used to be good until they changed the layout out of the Dunlop chicane. I remember watching McLaren's launching out of there in '95. Awesome!
How easy is it to get to the viewing area at the Porsche curves? Fancy a look from there this year.

Tetre Rouge - stand on the outside at the breaking point and watch them come over the brow, downchange, apex and then barrel off down the Mulsanne. If there`s nothing following you can hear them for a long, long time!
Arnage - at sundown, nice barbie (english bangers) on the banking. Still plenty in the race so normally some good action. It used to me much better when you could walk up and see Indianapolis properly though.
Mulsanne corner - in fact, beyond the corner, right back in the trees as far as you can go up the straight towards indianapolis. Fantastic fullbore acceleration and a nice spot for a ruminative beer/joint!
Oh, and the Mulsanne itself - if you can avoid les flics and get there...

Main straight about 3 am .. you get the full effect of the cars at full song... Tetre Rouge same time to see them blast down the Mullsane.
Arnarge corner for the Brakes and Turbo's glowing.
Also second the post about Mullsane corner, get yourself in a direct line of the exit of the corner, you can experience full bore acceleration

Arnage - simply the best. glowing disks, the odd scuffle round the bend plus loads of late braking action as the LMP's pass the GT's. gets cold but wine, fags and sleeping bags help on that front.
Then you get the sunrise behind the cars as they approach from indianapolis - great photos
