Does anyone know if we are able to use our fancy new chip & PIN cars over in France at automated petrol stations?

I'd been led to beleive our systems are not compatible so they would not...

Was over last month with friends and the expression ' don't worry, I've got a new C+P card that'll work' was heard on Saturday, before Sunday .... following me .... what happened on Sunday was a 3hr 40mile dribble around the Loire valley to find petrol with an attendant after much cursing swearing and phoning of the card provider who had absolutely gauranteed it would work in France ..... Tossers ...

Our friends are regular France visitors and had been seeking a card that would work and though they had it sorted, they were not chuffed !!

UK C&P CARDS DO NOT WORK IN FRANCE

Plus most so-called 24hr petrol stations go un-manned from 7.00ish in the evening.

The best action is to break the speed limit. The Gendarmes are more than happy to show you where the nearest cashpoint is when you've nudged slightly over the limit

I had heard that their chip & PIN system was a sensible, secure one, but they are under pressure to change theirs to be crap like ours - good old Europe...

fellow team peach melba

this does not happen with said team, but always with others on every trip and is much fun, so trying to help others not to endure stress by running on fumes and the heartache of others

UK chip and pin will NOT work in France. And as said before lots of 24hr service stations require French bank/credit cards to work. If you have a French bank account they work very well.

Service stations on the auto-routes are normally true 24hour places though.

Is there any way we Roast Beef can obtain a French account for these sort of purposes?

It may be worth checking out Credit Agricole's Brit line on the net. This is for UK residents who are buying in France. It is fairly easy to get a French bank account by doing a day trip to Calais, but I cannot remember if you need a French address, or at least a proposed address.
Something to bear in mind is that French banks operate like UK business accounts i.e. you pay for everything, cash withdrawls, cheques, statements, the lot.

Sorry, but I disagree. I have used my UK Chip and Pin Card many times whilst travelling in Europe, mainly in France and Belgium. Infact the first time I used my UK Chip and Pin was in Carrefour in the Citie L'Europe.
have a look here on the Barclaycard website and here on the chip and pin info site.

You will continue to be able to use cards overseas. UK chip and PIN cards that carry the international card scheme logos will be accepted by overseas retailers and cash machines just as before. Where the country you are visiting has already upgraded to chip and PIN you will be asked to enter your PIN in the same way as you will in the UK. Where the country in question has not upgraded you will be asked to provide your signature instead. In France, although French customers use PIN already, UK cardholders will continue to use signature for some time.
This confirms what I'd heard from some of the PDQ suppliers we integrate with. The French system was secure and more complex, hence not compatible with our cheap and insecure system - but we and Europe are forcing France to change theirs to work with the rest of Europe.

[rant]I'm just amazed that the media hasn't picked up on what the credit card companies are doing with Chip & PIN, as it will stop only amateur fraudsters, the main intent is to shift the blame onto card-holders for any fraud that occurs.[/rant]
