LMP2 - whats the point?

Can anyone enlighten me into why we have LMP2?

Af the end of this years 24 hours the winning LMP2 car finished 25th, 101 laps behind the leader.

Only one other LMP2 car came in behind it and then the Morgan and that was it.

The thing that really winds me up is that both these cars get an automatic entry to next years race and a lot of other cars that would be much more competitive will be excluded.

Am i missing something?

I think it's a bit pointless too. I think LMP2 should be a bit faster and part of LMP1 category. And more LM GT and LM GTS cars!

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but the LMP2 cars lap in about 4 minutes at their fastest. That's about 10 seconds faster than the GTs. From that I surmise that it was either fuel tank size or reliability that put them right at the bottom of the classification.
