Just a warning to anyone who is travelling to the ports from the midlands or up north and planning to use the A34.

The highways agency have got more road works setup to the South of Newbury, so as well as the M4 junction road works there is a new 6 mile stretch of Contraflows.
It caused choas last week, so give yourself some extra time !!

I am using this stretch on Monday and Tuesday so will post an update then !!

if your using the A34 between Newbury and Winchester forget it at busy times. There is contraflow near whitchurch, and I see regular tailbacks of 3-4 miles each way at peak periods. your options if your going that way are as follows.

1. go into Newbury, head for Basingstoke, and rejoin the M3 at Junc 6 or 7

2. head off on the A343 (just passed newbury), go towards Andover, join the A303 london bound, and then rejoin the A34 at the Bullington Cross junction (just south of Whitchurch.

3. leave the A34 and take the "old" A34 just passed highclear, go into Whitchurch town centre and then rejoin the A34 after Whitchurch.(Beware though, lots of traffic have started to use this route, and the police are watching very closely)
