My wife had an accident with a guy who was dicking about on a motorbike who rode into her. He was doing 60mph ++ in the middle of a town centre. His insurer didn't cover him. They paid for our car, but not his bike or damages.

This is exactly what you'd expect any insurer to do isn't it?

I'm fairly sure they can't excuse themselves of cover for the third party (which is why third party insurance is a legal minimum to use a car on the roads) regardless of whatever dumb antics the driver was up to, but there are usually exclusions galore when it comes to covering the driver for their personal losses if they happen to incur them due to massive asshattery.

Gutted for you then mate, I'm impressed you managed to remain calm and reasonable enough to get all that done. I'm not so sure I could have been, were it my XK and my tent that was damaged.

Was my mates car he sorted all that out, same boat as you if it was mine don't think I'd be as calm as he was
