Generally a fantastic race apart from the extended safety car periods, but kept me watching for almost the entirety. Makes F1 look deeply pedestrian…
To make a comparison with cricket, it's like a test match compared to Twenty20.

The thing that strikes me the most between F1 and WEC is that WEC has far more overtaking DESPITE not having the DRS gimmick. These cars CAN slipstream (and benefit from it), whereas F1 cars dirty the airflow so much that following cars are hindered by it.

That single change* would transform F1 as a spectacle, and would let the drivers go wheel to wheel far more frequently and far more easily.

(Of course, it may also lead to more accidents, but (a) that would add drama to the championship season again, as (un)reliability used to when I was young; and (b) can be managed/mitigated by appropriate penalties for e.g. causing a race-ending collision.)

* OK, and engine note - I utterly detest the current droning, blaring 6's.

The other great thing about WEC is that if the V6 leaves you cold, as it does me, you can just listen to the Mustangs in GT3

They do need to make the merge and the pass around happen at the same time though. LEAD SC slows down, second SC slows down a bit less, pass around happens at the same time. By the time the 2nd and 3rd SCs have caught the lead SC everyone is in the right place and the SCs can peel off.

I’d do the shuffle/merge immediately. A safety car would have a designated red flag period of 5-10 minutes. Once all cars have pitted or lined up on the grid, they would restart behind a single safety car, with those who didn’t pit taking priority behind the SC.

Or just go back to the three safety cars and leave it as it was. No merge or pass around. The circuit is too long for the pass around.

Some you win, some you lose. Same as always with safety cars.

Think they are next year.
F1 is not removing tyre warmers.

Keeps a British business going, they are made in the UK.

I don't see the difference between that and having just one safety car.

Did either Rossi or Sylvain Guintoli finish?

It is fundamentally the same, it’s just finding the safest and quickest way to achieve it.

Rossi didn’t, his team mate binned it off for him again.

shame the other Ferrari ruined the possible win for 7 Toyota, would have been good to se the Toyota and Ferrari fighting for the win.

He wasn't, not this year, maybe next.

This year Steller Motorsport in LMP2 didn't get an entry. - https://bikesportnews.com/news/sylvain-guintoli-to...

what alot of people dont know, you cant just get an entry, you have to be invited, if you havnt done much before then it wont happen, they are over subscribed most years,, so can pick and chose.
if you havnt done, as a team, a few years of elms or similar then no chance.

Great race, apart from the endless hours of the safety car period overnight, but watched probably 20 hours in total on the app.

Enjoyed it immensely.

History repeats itself. 41 years ago at LM I took this photo of Vern Schuppan’s Porsche 956 after it had lost a door on the Mulsanne. The door was replaced and the car went on to win - crossing the line in clouds of smoke.

During the door-less laps the airflow into the left hip radiator was compromised and the left bank of the engine began to cook itself. The car would not have lasted a further lap ….
