Q4 or ix1 buying?
Discussion
Currently have a Honda Eny1 which is due to be handed back in March. Got the car back in 2024 on the cheap deals and actually have quite liked the car. Anyway, phoned Honda today who said I can't extend the finance so it's definitely going back.
Looking at similar sized EVs there is not anything around the £300 mark that I like except for Chinese offerings which I don't really want.
So know looking at used cars, budget is around the £20k mark. We quite like the ix1 but for a decent spec these are over £25k and I doubt they'll be around £20k mark in March.
Other car we like is the Q4, most likely the 40 version due to it's improved range Vs the 35.
Would quite like a good spec so looking for cars with the tech pack and the comfort pack. Seen a few around £20k.
Any thoughts on the Q4 around £20k?
Like most EVs they have depreciated badly, do you think they'll continue or will level out soon?
Also they have a 8 year battery warranty which will expire in a few years?
Any thoughts

They have a problem with coolant getting into the motors which is an expensive fix.
Supposedly servicing at the correct intervals stops this happening but there are stories of it still happening.
Stopped the Q4 being on my shortlist.
Thank, I did read about this being on the early models. I believe this was sorted when the Q4 got the AP550 motor in 2024?Supposedly servicing at the correct intervals stops this happening but there are stories of it still happening.

If so, there above my budget!

Degradation on the MEB platform is not known to be an issue either. There was some accelerated aging testing done of an ID3 by the German equivalent of the AA, where the battery was subjected to some pretty harsh charging routines and it was still at 91% SOH after 107,000 miles.

The coolant issue has nothing to do with the Q4 etron.
On reliability, degredation and range our 5 year old, 60k etron is still in great health delivering basically the same range it did when new and has been problem free in our almost 2 years of ownership.
That's 2.5 miles/kWh from the original 86.5kW total battery capacity, which exactly matches what the efficiency is currently reporting now overnight temps have dropped significantly.
I know its not the same car, but I had a 2022 BMW iX3 from new and did 93,000 miles in 3 years with zero faults apart from a large number of tyres it wanted for nothing, 99% of the charging was done on the home charger, and was still returning the same range after those miles.
Really enjoyed having the car to be honest.
It will never do the advertised 280miles though normally 195 in winter and high of 240 in the summer. It was driven like a ICE car and never tried to get eek out all the range!
I think they are good value on the used market, as they come with every option you could possibly want.
I now have a latest X3 hybrid and the build quality is nowhere near as good as the last generation in my opinion. 54 miles electric range is enough for everyday use for me, and my mileage has dropped substantially

Thanks the iX3 would be a good shout but we have a G05 X5 as the main family car, so having a 2nd large SUV feels like an overkill.Really enjoyed having the car to be honest.

Hence looking for something a bit small for the 2nd car like a Q4 or iX1.
My friend has a new Q6 and has nothing but troubles with it and can't wait to get rid and it's only been 9 months. More annoyances and glitches but they are every month without fail. The big one being the screens just don't work at all so you have no speed etc and it randomly decides to delete the charging schedules so he wakes up having had it not charge up. Nothing major but it's more annoying that they can't be fixed as they are "software bugs" and Audi say future updates should fix any problems. Efficiency is very poor in it too. He doesn't drive fast and whenever I have been in it he tends to be averaging 2-2.5m/kWh

Irrelevant to me as the Q6 is not on my budget!Screenwash said:
I d rather risk a new Chinese/Korean/Japanese car over a 3-4 year old Q4! Reliability, range, battery health, cost of spares and repairs, . You feeling lucky?!
But then I guess you gotta sit in it and drive it! Depending how nice the cockpit is, and how you feel about the brand name your associated with.
We're likely to get a q4 in the spring, think for the price point it's unbeatable and the vast numbers on sale show what a success it is, best looking, best brand of the VAG range. There are a few moans, check on FB, which seems to be largely numpties not fundamental issues. As long as you have the latest software update
Similar to you, mrs will not tolerate Chinese/Korean/Tesla offerings no matter how good they are
Still a premium for the 45 which is undoubtedly better (although range increases by 10 miles only) and more powerful but in everyday use the 40 is probably adequate. Sline is small premium but fatter tyres lose range and suspension could be a bit firm for daily driving, road test needed

Whats the selling point of the Q4 over the ID4 for you? Similar to you, mrs will not tolerate Chinese/Korean/Tesla offerings no matter how good they are

Interior? Handling? Image?
Ive only looked at either on paper, the VW appears to have more interior space, softer suspension, all good stuff. But the Audi gets praised for having buttons not touch screen, which I noticed even ten years ago with the VW vs Audi.

You said it, looks, badge etc for women (and many men) it's all about image. I just want a cheap total cost of ownership for endless child oriented miles
Like the idea of a i4 BMW but seats are bizarrely figure hugging, I'm not fat just largish.....

Must be plenty of component/system commonality tho?
I'm sure it does share parts, but so does every EV in the VW group. Does that mean I should all EVs in the group? Also the Q6 is a new platform and has just been released so is likely to get issues in the first few years. This is no different to any other new car it's first couple of years in production.
