£17k first EV Choice
Discussion
This is going to be my first step into the EV world, but fancy taking advantage of the superb value of used EV's. Already have home solar and will be getting a home charger. All my journeys are short, sub 30 mile round trips at most, but need space for my 2 dogs so no 4dr options.
Current shortlist is;
- Polestar 2
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Hyundai Ioniq 5
- Skoda Enyaq
- Tesla Model S
Anything else I should consider that will be a fairly reliable choice?
Anyone give some real world reviews of the above?
Im currently dallying my Nissan Elgrand 3.5, so the next car will be a world away from what I'm in now!

If all your journeys will be short, you would be OK with just a dedicated outside 3 pin socket. It'd take a very long time to recover the cost of a home charger since you can get a cheap overnight rate on an EV tariff, albeit you'd charge faster. Unless you get one thrown in for free of course.

I’d rule out the Polestar, not practical for dogs.Current shortlist is;

A home battery is more important than solar as you can use Octopus IOG to charge at night and use during the day. In winter, I am barely getting anything from the sun sadly. So a worthy investment if you can! If you have 2 dogs, worth considering a 5-seater van with a big boot (Townstar, Berlingo)?Current shortlist is;

Depends how big the dogs are. My old German shepherd would not have appreciated it. Our shih tzu is fine in there, it’s a hatchback so we just take the parcel shelf out. And obviously the seats fold flat, if you don’t need to seat anyone in there when transporting hounds. Probably the Tesla too..
Mine is a 2024 long range dual motor. I’ve had it about 5 months. I like it. So far nothing has gone wrong, it’s quick, comfortable, pleasant inside. I like how it drives, I’m happy with the tech. Some people don’t like the infotainment interface, maybe earlier versions were worse but I can’t see what’s wrong with it. Mine is on 19 inch wheels and the ride is ok - press cars were on 20’s and were criticised so perhaps that makes a big difference. It charges quickly on a fast charger, and the range is fine for my needs.

Thanks for the info, 2 smallish dogs here (staffy and a short romanian rescue) so any hatchback would workMine is a 2024 long range dual motor. I ve had it about 5 months. I like it. Should have added, yes we have a battery storage as well, only a 4kwh battery, but im about to double up so have a 8kwh totalWe have a Model Y and of recent months have been carting about a Labrador mix who seems happy in the back. We have a rear deck cover as we like to fill with all sorts of stuff inclusive f plants, building materials and use it for dump runs. We also bought a tesla branded back seat cover for dogs (it also has interior rear door covering and protects the rear of the front seats). This option also works fine.
My other daughter has a model 3 and it dead easy to flip the rear seat backs down and convert it into a bed. Seems like this might also be an option if you are happy driving it as a two seater with large rear deck...

ID4. We bought one a week ago and our Golden Retriever is absolutely delighted with the boot space. And we love the car - it's fantastic. Make sure you test drive it and see how you actually feel instead of just reading reviews!
ID4 does seem to be great value, might put it back on the list!BobToc said:
Not sure what year of Ioniq 5 but while they re great cars I wouldn t want to hold on to one beyond the 5 year warranty due to the ICCB issue that they still don t seem to have got to the bottom of. I m looking to shift my 2022 by the end of next year.
It would have been an early one at my budget, done some research and does seem to be an issue, annoying as a great looking motor!AceKid said:

My other half's X1 didn't have 99% of what this does, so it feels pretty fully loaded to us both! Really would recommend it and very pleased with it. Happy to answer questions on it if it helps.
