Aging Wheels got involved in a project to do the Cannonball Run across America in a Rivian pickup, modified to extend its range with a flatbed full of batteries. This is part 1.

Aging Wheels is a madman, not quite on the level of Colin Furze but not far off.
That looks like a proper project, video is worth a watch.

I'm glad I was coming to the same solution they did (people with a lot more knowledge on the subject than I have).

Odd that they didn't add an aero top on the bed, those can give some incredible efficiency gains, especially at high speeds.
Maybe looking completely stock was one of their self-set goals?

There's always an element of stealth in these runs, you see cars with taped up lights and fake badges in an attempt to fool the local traffic police. I'm guessing the Rivian were tapping into the same logic?

That is brilliantly nuts!

Thanks for the link. Enjoyed watching some mad scientists working with invisible death and looking forward to part 2.

Agreed, looked sketch AF, even though they obviously know what they are doing.
One wrong touch or leak and the thing will explode half the cells in your body in a millisecond.

really interesting that he found maxing out the payload capacity on his Silverado EV only dropped the range by 4%. So weight not really an issue (I guess you get of acceleration losses back through greater regen)

An interesting watch. smile There are many factors to range, though. Weight is a factor, but not greatly so. My EV drops by nearly 10% if I put the heating on. eek It would need a proper 'same conditions' test to be accurate. External temperature is a big factor when the vehicle needs to control the battery condition.

The test I saw he did was the same stretch of road, back and forth on the same day.
So fairly accurate I'd say, as far as youtube science goes.

Not anti-ev, and all for this, but the haters have a point when you compare this with the original opening sequence and NOISE.....

Fair enough. Very good comparisons. I hadn't realised quite how many different ways there are of quoting efficiency. Nice to see he knows he has many UK watchers. smile

As opposed to all those in the US, Liberia and Burma

Eh? I'm aware many countries use different measures of efficiency but he quotes mpg equivalent (UK) as one. A bit shaky the 'equivalent,' since it depends on the price of fuel that day, but I do it myself when trying to explain how cheap it is to charge at home to those without an EV. smile

Amusing though. biggrin

The general lack of awareness of the world beyond the borders of the US is amusing to behold and this respect that Rivian youtube video is exceptional. So to my mind, the Archer sketch is on point as a portrayal of the norm

Put spoilers here for those who haven't watched part 2.
Hmm. I was skeptical when he started mentioning their efficiency.
Well over 330wh/km is the real killer there, and I'm sure they knew that going in.

You add all the battery faf and possible new problems introduced and it seems like you're going to have a hard time competing against something like even a modern Model 3 SR, which can easily get below 200wh/km or even 150wh/km.
So yes, they can double the charge speed of a "regular" EV (and possibly hold it longer), but they need to to even just match said EV.

Still, it's a great project and as he said they learned a lot.

Good fun but fairly predictable.

Just wondered how many miles range you could get in an original ioniq (4-5mi/kWh) stuffed full of modern batteries...
