MG3, how has this not featured on pistonheads yet, secret hot hatch killer

195 bhp, instant electric torque backed by 1.5 4 cyl engine, quoted 8 0-60 but Matt Watson got 6.7

It's not the 0-60, it's the in gear acceleration, properly rapid, I've also been averaged 60 mpg in my 30 mile commute with lots of brief squirts of the throttle, wicked car with all the gadgets you need including 8 speaker sound system and pre conditioning, can pre heat or pre cool it

Handling department it's no fiesta st but who needs cornering in the traffic lights gp

I looks like the old Fiesta to be fair. Not offensive and nippy. Is the top power on 3 speed auto or CVT?

Edit. 3 speed auto on the MG site. Seems like a decent runaround for the price.

I'm guessing you're new to electrically driven vehicles?

Wait until you try one that's 3s to 60.

I'm not sure you can kill something that's already dead. There's hardly a long line of b segment/supermini sized hot hatches out there on sale.

Funnily enough, I have, I'm no stranger to fast combustion-engined cars, however, the reason I specifically mention this car and emphasize the word 'offensive' is because this car has no business being that quick, it's almost as if it's an accident because the acceleration does not suit the car one bit

I had a look at the MG3 and it does have gears. I thought they were CVT. Oops.

The torque fill from the electrical bit is the culprit, particularly from standstill as it fills the slack in the engine and gearbox. Makes a huge supercharging difference to the feeling of a small engine.

I had an MG ZS manual hirecar for a week recently. My first Chinese car - it was surprisingly decent but the seats were the most plastic of plastic fake leatheretteum I’ve ever sweated on. Like Uber taxi seat covers. Hideous. Apart from that, no rattles, everything seemed well thought out, my only other gripes were some bits of the digital dash were completely unreadable in daylight and the gear change seemed to have some spare slots in between the actual gears - very vague. VW, Vauxhall and the French should be very worried by now.

I have my eye on one of these as our pool car but as they are relatively new i will wait and see how reliable they are first.

I have seen a few tests on YouTube and they seem a fun cheap runaround.

How much are they?

Are they charged from a three pin domestic plug?

I was considering one earlier in the year but the numerous reports of gear change issues put me off. Also it hasn't been NCAP rated yet.

3 speed auto in 2025, never thought that would happen! Feels like a throwback to the 70s.

I suppose the hybrid torque infill is enough to compensate for wide ratio spacing, and probably allows for a relatively high first gear as well.

Be interesting to know the engine speed at 70mph in top gear.

MG's website says they start at £18,995.

It's not a plug-in hybrid.

Most Hybrids are single speed, my (plug in) Mitsubishi is. It revs quite high on engine only because of the way its configured, but most of the time its inaudible so I don't care.

I hope they've improved the MG pilot since we had our 71-reg MG4 - that suffered from various phantom braking episodes, Lane change assist was borderline scary, refusal to engage reverse, constant binging and bonging. It didnt inspire confidence.

Shame as the rest of the car was quite good fun, and very good vfm.
