EV Tariff Without a Smart Meter?

I live in the sticks with at best iffy mobile signal.
We did try to get Eon to fit a smart meter but the install guy said only 50/50 chance of a reliable signal and hence success in having an operational meter, so we told him thanks but no thanks as it would prevent us getting an EV tariff with out the 30 min usage uploads.
So is it possible that there are options to allow me to get an EV tariff in my circumstances ? Not wedded to Eon so any decent provider is fine.

Should be able to get Octopus Go (not Intelligent Octopus Go, which requires a smart meter). Think that's a good shout, Octopus seem to be most innovative in this space so I think I'll try them. Eon just wanted to get the meter installed with me, not at all concerned if it worked or not.Did look at Energy 7 and it seems little benefit compared to my current 25p/kW. Think it's 10p overnight but way more during the day.
Surely a smart meter "with a 50:50 chance of working " would be better than no smart meter and a zero chance of an EV tariff?
I'm pretty sure that any dual-rate tariff will need a smart meter with working comms, otherwise how would they know what you used at each rate?
E7 would be the exception, but it relies on a radio tele-switch to switch between the 2 meters, and that service is apparently being switched off in the near future.

No chance of an EV tariff with Octopus without functioning smart meter (submitting 30min readings for a couple of weeks). I had a smart meter fitted by Octopus recently and they couldn't commission the meter due to poor signal. Install op tried two units and neither worked. Said there was a slim opportunity they could do something remotely to help. Octopus tried a remote commission themselves with no success, but then a further commission request when I was home (where I pressed a button on the unit) worked and it's been functioning and submitting half hourly readings for 3/4 weeks now so will change onto a GO tariff. Octopus have been a PITA to deal with and the level of (dis)information the different teams have on the subject is eye-opening - got a different answer to whoever I spoke to. I'm in the North FFIW and radio signal. No chance to boost signal or add an antenna for this. Frustrating thing is now it's working we're looking at moving house and will no doubt go through it all again!
I'd get a smart meter fitted and see how you get on with the commission and connection. Fingers crossed.

I'm with British gas and use a dumb commando socket to charge our EV....
We are with British gas on their overnight EV tariff (7.5p midnight to 5am,24p at normal rates) and you don't need a smart meter to access this tariff...in fact you can use it for anything..we do the washing/drying/dishwasher on the overnight tariff too.

How do they know what to charge you for midnight to 5am? Slightly confused about a lot of this. I have the EDF EV tarrif. It’s about 9p a KWh from midnight to 5.00am. I believe it applies to all electricity used in the house in this period - but how would it distinguish between the EV charger and the dishwasher? How does the British Gas tariff know how much you’re using on the off peak period if it’s not getting readings from a smart meter? We are with British gas on their overnight EV tariff (7.5p midnight to 5am,24p at normal rates) and you don't need a smart meter to access this tariff...in fact you can use it for anything..we do the washing/drying/dishwasher on the overnight tariff too.

Some of the EV tariffs require a compatible Smart EV charger and so they know what has gone to the car and they apply a discount to your bill for those kWh only.OVO Anytime charges 7p per KWH overnight without the requirement for a smart meter on the condition that you have a compatible charge point.
I have an Ohme pro charger - this has a built in sim card that sends the car charging usage data directly to OVO.
You don't get whole house cheap electric though, but it is still better than paying full price to charge.
I used OVO for a year until I had my electrics moved in my house so that I could receive a signal.
