A friend of my daughter is looking for a new hybrid second-hand car, she is getting a new job which will involve a lot of driving and high mileage.
Looking in the region of 9 to11.5K would like a hatchback, not interested in suv style. Not having had experience with this type of vehicle i thought i would ask the massed minds on here for any significant pointers, such as petrol or diesel hybrid, and what about the battery life/reliability.

In advance thanks for all your advice.

Impossible to say without a bit more info

- What's the actual mileage per month and what's the length and frequency of the longest trips/most miles in a day?

- Can she park on a drive etc to allow charging at home? She wouldn't need a dedicated car charger, just a 3pin power supply near where the car can be charged...

- Is she expensing the miles to her employer or would they pay fuel/power?

Absolutely - Auris or Corolla Hybrid definitely the way to go. Bulletproof reliability and very low long term running costs.

Honda Insight G2 Hybrid is a boring reliable CVT workhorse and cheaper..

Cheap tax and 50mpg+

Get a late one and just check for rot.

IMA Batteries can be rejuvenated/fixed.

What they said - a million Uber drivers can't be wrong.

However make sure you take a test drive - the CVT gearbox can feel odd to some people.

Bargain of the year

ETA Possibly a deliberate scam - mileage is 143k, not 14k frown

Some great suggestions above, but still impossible to say what is actually best, including running costs, without knowing the drivers journey profile.

Spending more a PHEV or even BEV could be far cheaper in some scenarios.

Hybrids, especially plug in hybrids, are good for short journeys or stop start trips where the engine spends most of its time switched off. We had a Passat GTE that was perfect for my wife's 11 mile commute- we averaged well over 100 mpg as we could charge it at home and the engine was barely used for most trips. If her use is similar there are Golf GTE's available with the same drivetrain within her budget.

If her journeys are longer she might be better off with a Diesel- although having said that we averaged 45mpg driving from Bedfordshire to Disneyland Paris in our Passat last year.

Agree with Toyota hybrid.
Auris has a manual park brake, Corolla is electric, not suggesting which is best just mentioning.
Auris CAT is targetted by scum for theft, this may or may not be an issue depending on where the car is likely to be parked, Corolla CAT is more difficult to get at.
