I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions on switching to an EV...
So recently Mrs Ste-EVo and I decided we needed a new car, something fit for our family. With her liking the higher driving position and ease of access, an SUV was what we wanted to replace our 2016 Nissan Qashqai and to be honest I think they work great for family life, decent space inside, good visibility, good luggage space etc etc. I know they get a lot of hate on here, but SUV's have their place, anyway that's another story...
Long and the short of it is we didn't consider an EV at all initially and until we had one, I was dead against them. I thought the infrastructure was poor and the ranges equally so and generally I just didn't like the idea of EV's.
However,... After giving them some thought when visiting a few dealers, it turns out that the deals available on new EV's were pretty damn good and the fuel/running cost savings are pretty substantial, not to mention the performance of EV's is pretty good. So, a couple weeks went by, and I researched the idea, spoke to some friends with EV's and reviewed the cars we liked and were sold on the idea. We narrowed our search down to a small few and decided to go with a Honda E:ny1 (daft name, but a great car) with 270ish mile range. I'll not go into the numbers, but the deal was fantastic, including a 5 year service plan and warranty. Although on PCP, so it's unlikely we will keep after the 3 years and just chop in in for something else.
An EV works well for our life, we do about 200 miles per weeks, charging once a week at home works great for us on the cheap rate from Octopus IOG with an Ohme Epod charger.
Initially there was a little bit of range anxiety but the charging overnight it so easy if we needed a top up, takes all of 5 mins to set the app and plug in and leave.
Yes, the range drops when the heaters/air con is on and noticing it as the weather has taken a turn for the worst here up North. I'm yet to try public charging but I can't imagine its something we will need to use very often other than a couple of trips to Center Parcs each year and a trip to the lakes or the Cotswolds now and again but the charging but can be tied in with a comfort break with the kids.
I get it doesn't fit with everyone's lives, but I'm really impressed and have no burning desire to revert to an ICE car, and I've found the whole world of EV's quite exciting, there are some really cool and interesting cars due out soon too.

Some mind boggling good deals on honda over the last few weeks. Seems like nice cars, would be very tempted but boot a bit too small for our family.
Glad you are enjoying it! I am also an EV convert. If you charge at home they are so convenient and so cheap to run!!
Plus I find them incredible easy to drive, not in a bad way, in a I can pootle around town at 20mph with so little effort, but i can also put my foot down and grin from ear to ear.
Somehow feel easier to drive than an auto ice car but I can't quite explain why!
I hope you continue to enjoy it. Share a pic or 2!

OP, your experience start to finish mirrors my own and I suspect will prove to mirror that of most people that currently have no interest in an EV.
It starts with the fact that most people with a petrol car are absolutely not going to show and serious interest in EV until they actually decide they need a new car. So long as they're keeping the car they currently have, they'll remeber the good reasons they bought that car, they'll consider it to work fine, so why even give EV any thought at all?
But then once you do decide to start car shopping... the maths steps in and has a tendency to override any pre-established opinions on EV
You also mentioned friends with EV's, which I can relate to. I think as the number of EV drivers continues to rise, more people will find they have friends with one that like them very much and will do their bit to both reassure and convince other friends to give it some serious consideration. Most people don't really know anything about EV's other than the drama they read in the press or hear down the pub - but friends and family, people who's opinions you know are genuine, are more powerful.
And indeed, when you get one you quickly marvel at how easy and convenient it is to charge at home - something that almost everyone will be able to do in some form by the time they actually need to consider getting an EV.
NB: Before going on longer trips sign up for Octopus Electroverse if you haven't already. They'll send you a card to tap at most rapid chargers which will usually trigger a discount and also bill the charge to your home energy account. Signing up is free and the adjoining app will help you find available chargers along a route in moments. You can also tap any old payment card on most rapid chargers these days - but might as well grab the discount where possible.

New EV owner here as well - 2 weeks in.
Lease car was going back, so I decided the Sal Sac offering was the way forward.
Ohme Pro fitted and if it wasn't for the shower of ste that is OVO, I'd be even more pleased (my Smart meter is not SMART) so I cannot move to Charge Anytime where the overnight rate is 7p.
BUT apart from that, the ease, the silence and the space is brilliant.
Mrs drives 35m a day to her work, and with some kids activities it is easily 200miles a week. So far, it's been great and I don't miss having to stop at the petrol station every fortnight.
Did a 70m round trip today and the expected battery level was a made up number - but we had the A/C on, kids had their phones plugged in and there was some spirited overtakes when cars were doing 40 on a 60....
I can see the appeal and yes, it doesn't have the same feel as an ICE, but for a lot of users (us in this house) it works a treat.
500mile trip from one end of the country to the other scheduled for Xmas - so cold weather, motorway and a full car. I know that the range will be an issue and the stops more frequent than before, but the ease of all the other times makes up for it tenfold.

I too will happily deal with occasional public charging once every now and then in return for the year long smugness of not having to visit a petrol station
I recently did a 450 mile out and back trip in a day, I started with a full charge and stopped twice for around 20 minutes each time. The drive must have taken me close to 8 hours so realistically I would always have stopped for at least that long on each leg even when I drove a diesel that could do it on a single tank. I've reached the conclusion that it really doesn't impact overall journey time enough to worry about. If I am ever stuck waiting, I just use the time to reply to an email or do some shopping. There's always something useful to do.
Prior to having an EV, I casually assumed the idiots that did spent their lives waiting for hours at a time at motorway services to go another 50 miles
I did order the Honda, but cancelled it & purchased a Jan25 Škoda Enyaq instead, for around the same price (under £30k with sunroof/full leather/options/300 mile range in real life/5k miles) I signed up to their expensive PCP to get £1k off & 2 free services, withdrew after a few days but keep the perks!.
Home charging here too. Octopus Go, ohme. The whole house is 7pKwh if it decides to charge outside 2330-0530.
1 public charge so far at NEC, easy.
A long trip next week, I’ll be using ABRP nav, on which i’ve filter to only use Tesla chargers, as usually cheaper & better.
The nav sorts out where to stop & for how long.
Great for us, pleased I switched to EV.
I’ll renew the car tax in Feb, to get another free year, unless that loophole is closed!
The car is great, quiet & comfortable. The double skin glass & extra soundproofing pack.
My interior is same as this, from the app:-

I suppose, as time goes by, the likelihood of being a passenger in someone else's EV or being handed one as a courtesy car for a day (which is what happened to me) will increase.
More and more people will experience the instant torque, lack of annoying gear changes and the serenity that an EV offers. It is this (along with the reassurance of increased charging structure availability) that will help drive the switch to EV.

I know your activity on here is low, but e:Ny1 has been spoken about at great length on here - it’s even got its own threads, this one about the deals: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
and this one is supposed to be about running the car:

The original deal, early this year, was astonishing, the later ones still good, but less so.
If your missus is happy with the car then that’s great, but Honda isn’t a charity - there’s a reason why these were so cheap.
You won’t be chopping it in - there’s absolutely no way these will be worth more than their final payment.

Same as picking up a great lease deal. I'm on my fourth now, and obviously I have no value at the end of it... But I might still say I'm chopping the car in for another.

I have been covering around 3,000 miles a month in it and have only come across one broken charger on the road which was fixed with a quick call to Gridserve to reset it.
Car is charged at home which gives me 240-250 miles every morning, I have seen 300 miles on a rather slow moving, busy motorway journey.
In reality I can only cover 200 miles before I need to stop for a pee, check my email and grab a coffee. Plug it in for 20-30 mins and I have another 200 miles in the tank.
Longest journey has been London to Stirling and back over 3 days, the total journey was nearly 1000 miles by the time I'd criss crossed the country for other meetings. Charged twice on the way up and once on the way back, all at times I would have stopped anyway.
Going to Bournemouth for a meeting on Monday, there and back on a charge easy. Going to Derby and back on Tuesday, will probably need a 5 or 10 min top up on the journey somewhere.
The tech in the car makes it easy to plan a route, it advises where to stop, if the chargers busy as you approach it diverts you to the next one so you're not sat waiting to plug in.
Really didn't want an electric car, my veins are full of petrol, but the companies going green and low BIK to high BHP made it an easy if difficult choice. It's been a very easy transition and I would highly recommend it to anyone who can charge at home as charging on the road is eye wateringly expensive.

New EV owner here too. I had a PHEV before it with 25 mile EV only range, so ownership feels pretty much the same as that so far. Lease car was going back, so I decided the Sal Sac offering was the way forward.

My is on a personal lease, as we've leased our main family car for years now and the best deals were on EV's. The 380 odd mile advertised range was enough to help take the plunge. Ours will seldom do more than 40/50 miles in a round trip however my in-laws are 250 miles away door to door, I'm now pessimistic that in winter it will do that fully loaded not a big deal as we always stop at least once. First taste of public charging will be when it gets used to go to Glasgow airport which is 300 miles round trip which simialry I don't think it will do when it's colder so I'll probably add some charge by stopping on the way rather than seeing what range there is on my return.
I'm glad to see others are also enjoying similar benefits with EV motoring as much as we are.
95% of my families' journeys are through necessity, rather than anything else, such as school runs, shopping, drop offs at dance class etc, and the majority are around the local towns and villages where the EV and auto works a dream. Its my first Auto (although I've drove many) and I'm a convert on that too, for these kinds of journeys - it is fantastic. I find they are so much slicker than an ICE auto, given there is no actual change of gear, I guess.
When I refer to 'chopping it in' I'm referring to Part X'ing at the end of the deal, if all it's worth after 3 years is the GFV then I'm good with that, I went into the deal with that expectation to hand it back after 3 years, walk away and get something else - so anything more is a bonus. So I'll very much be 'chopping it after' 3 years and getting a new 'deal'.
Thanks for the heads up on the above posts, i'll check them out.

Yea, the boot is a little on the small side, I knew this when I bought the car but so far its been fine, although a weeks shopping fills it where as there was plenty space to spare in the old Qashqai. I can only imagine it will be a issue if we go away for a week or so and have more luggage but Mrs Ste-EVo tends to over pack resulting in more bags for me to carry back and forth so this may steer here into packing lighter! Fingers crossed... Glad you are enjoying it! I am also an EV convert. If you charge at home they are so convenient and so cheap to run!!
