I have a 3 pin granny charger from a previous Hyundai company car which i kept hold of.

Never had the need for a charge point at home due to having free charging at work however the wife recently got a new EV and it would benefit to be topped up here and there, but still doesn't particularly warrant a dedicated home charger. We've managed 3 years without so far with no issues but sometimes handy just to give additional buffer.

Is there a reason this granny charger wouldn't work with a new Polestar 2?

I have tried with the granny charger at 6, 8 and 10amps, matching the charging rate on the Polestar and even knocking up the polestar charge rate to 32amp etc.

This is plugged directly into my garage 3 pin plug, no extension lead. The granny charger has worked on a Kona and Fiat 500e with no issues but for some reason initiated charge on the polestar and then almost immediately flashes with an error within 2 seconds of intitally working.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the charger on a different car after the fault became apparent?

Have you tried the Polestar on a different AC charger.

It's either a fault with the granny charger, or a fault with the AC charging system on the car.

It could be that the Polestar is more sensitive to ground leakage. Try a different plug socket if you haven’t already.

I have a PS2. It was a couple of weeks before I had my home charger fitted and in this time I used a 3 pin charger. It worked fine for me except when I used a manky old extension cable when it showed an error. Plugging straight into a socket it was fine.

I’m not sure if the granny charger originally came with the car, I got the car used and the 3 pin wire came with it.

It should work

I’d try it at someone else’s house to rule that element out

Then perhaps borrow a granny lead from someone else and try it at home

They came with the car for the first few years but stopped being provided with the facelift for MY24.

As long as the socket type is the same then all chargers should work with all cars so sounds like a fault to me

Extension cable are pretty dangerous things and manky old one all the more so. Purchase a new extension cable with a thermal cutout and alway fully unwind as per the instructions. I suspect you then find the granny charger is fine.
