Howdy

The sudden explosion of my civic has pushed the planned switch to a Hyundai Ioniq 38kwh a bit further forward.

We don't need a "proper" charger on the house for now and could make do with a 3 pin plug to charge overnight.

Are there suggestions for which to go for? I'm assuming we need a substantial/hardy one that we can use a timer with for the overnight tariff, or we could set this with th car?

Cheers

The 38 was supplied with a mains charger from new, and it has a charge timer built into the car.

Use the car's app or dash controls to set the charge times.

I've got my granny charger extension lead plugged into a Tapo P110 smart plug, but this is just a safety feature to disable the charger outside the cheap periods, and a handy power monitor.
The Tapo plug goes "live" 15 minutes before the car starts charging, and then switches off just after the cheap period has ended and the car has stopped charging.

I use a Toughleads extension cable, and I made sure that the socket in the garage was in good condition.

I also have the Ionic 38kW and have installed a heavy duty outside socket with heavy duty cable (25A) connecting to another heavy duty RCD socket inside my house. I have charged the car for 15h straight on a hot summers day and the plugs become mildly warm. I bought the items from Wickes and installed them myself, total cost was around £35. I'm very happy and avoided paying about £800 for a dedicated charger which I don't need.

I purchased a 38kw last year

Got home to find the 13amp socket in garage was too far away to charge via the granny. Got one of "those" looks off the other half.

Undaunted I purchased a Tough Lead extension. You can order them to custom lengths. Plugged it into the garage 13 amp and the granny into the extension. Has been brilliant.

As the previous poster said you can build them yourself but thats not an option for me.

The hyundai charger can switch between 6 8 and 10 amps which is handy for initial testing.

As someone said you dont need a smart plug as the scheduled charging is simples to setup in the car app.

Thought about getting a dedicated charger but dont really need it

Thanks for the replies - As is typical, the hunt for an Ioniq had been replaced with a hunt for a BMW I3s as I was wanting something a bit more fun and quirky, and through a friend we were able to get an Ohme Epod installed (well, this Friday) at a good price so binned off the 3-pin idea.
