Hello folks,

A family member has contacted me with a query.

She is now using a car a lot more now that she is at Uni. Currently she is driving a Fiat 500 but fancies something new which the parents will help with.

I suggested an EV as they mentioned her fuel costs are now really high as she makes regular 110mile trips 3-4x a week to Uni.

They drove past randomly and spotted the BYD Dolphin in Pink with the white interior and she has fallen in love with it (trust me we are thinking the same thing!). Seem to be getting a great deal of £750 upfront and under £300 a month.

Based online it seems that the BYD Dolphin should get roughly 4mi/kWh so should cut her fuel costs versus petrol to a 1/3 of what they currently are. Will be standard Tariff.

I have no experience of BYD as they seem quite new here in N.I. I do know the BYD Seal by all accounts is suppose to be good.

Anyone have any experience and think it could manage the 110mile plus say 30miles in winter? I have done the knock 20-30% off claimed range but would prefer real examples.

How do you find living with it and to drive? It doesn’t need to be amazing just ok or better than the Fiat 500.

I've no experience of them but we have a BYD dealer round the corner from work who have quite a few vehicles out the front but they dont seem to sell as the same row of cars have sat unmoved for a couple of months now.

The main thing to check with that cheap finaice quote is what is the mileage allowance as often these are only for 5k PA and if she is doing 350 miles a week most weeks thats probably 400 miles a week so she will run out of miles in a few months.

Might have changed now but they were tricky to get insurance for when they first arrived, so might be worth checking she can get an acceptable quote.

ETA: Do you have Honda dealers over there doing deals on the e:Ny1? It's not without issues but there were very low PCP monthlies on it, which seem to have come back again.

I wasn’t even aware we had a BYD dealer in N.I so it’s new to me as well.

Yes warned them about the mileage but would imagine they would have considered it.

I’ve seen the Honda deals on the e:Ny1 and think they are great. Don’t know if our dealers are doing them however.

Though in case the want for pink car wasn’t enough of a hint I think it’s important to mention that a key consideration might be would Katie Price drive it biglaugh unfortunately don’t think the Honda would meet the criteria.

I suggest a 208e which I drove and really liked but as her grandparents are getting one it was a big no unfortunately.
